Tournament Report

VIPUL KOTHARI TRIUMPHS!
OUTLASTS 183 FOR OMAHA CHAMPIONSHIP

The day started with 183 players in the Omaha Hi-Lo Championship and, after 15 hours of play, the last player standing was Vipul Kathori of Edison, NJ. He was able to overcome a middle-of-the-road starting chip position to overtake the chip leaders Bobby Ferdinand, Revere, MA, and Pablo "Diablo" Caraballo, Providence, RI. Vipul took home first place of $34,128 from a pool of $93,500 as well as the championship trophy.

Most of the damage at the final table was inflicted by Vipul and Pablo. The first to go was Jim Boyd of Martinsburg, WV. His A5 for low was topped by Pablo's A3 and was beat out for high by a flush on the river. Richard Pilchman was all-in with a pair of J's on the flop but Vipul caught a straight on the river to eliminate the Brick, NJ, resident. Local player Ray Bernstein of Cranston, RI, went all-in with an AJ but could never catch up to Vipul's AQ. He had to settle for 8th place.

Jim Bucci, Hollywood, MD, put up a spirited fight but, after losing a big pot when Pablo hit a diamond flush, his two pair for the win against Vipul was topped again by a river flush. Sixth and fifth places were claimed by Michael Noyes, Houston, TX, and Salvatore Tomazzolli, Tobyhanna, PA. Both players were eliminated by Pablo. Trip 2's did in Michael and Salvatore was unable to top A2 for low and K's for high.

Salvatore's 5th place finish was especially sweet considering his short stack position at the start of the final table. Douglas Gross of Basking Ridge, NJ, was the third straight victim of Pablo. When Pablo got his second pair on the river, Douglas' A's left him in fourth place.

The three remaining players were now playing at 4000-8000 limits. Bobby Ferdinand, who had started the final table as chip leader, had nearly lost all his chips and then fought back, was able to take Pablo to task. His quad K's in one hand did damage and his trip A's with the J kicker ended Pablo's night; third place money of $10,285 eased the pain for Pablo.

Vipul clawed his way to a good size advantage over Bobby and, after three all-ins by Bobby, was able to finally end play by pairing his A3 on the turn and river.

Bobby settled for second place money of $18,232 and Vipul was the New England Poker Classic Omaha Hi- Lo Champion for 2005.
