Tournament Report

BARRY BERGER CONQUERS RECORD FIELD IN $500 NO-LIMIT! The $500 No-Limit Hold'em Tournament of the 2005 New England Poker Classic set new records for entries and prize money. There were 958 entrants and a prize pool of $481,000 which compares to 494 entries and a prize pool of $249,000 in 2004. This year's first place prize of $131,073 was won by Barry Berger of Englewood, NJ. The final table began at 2 PM and it did not take long for the first player to move all-in. In the second hand played, Louis Barkoutsis, Bayside, NY, thought his AQ was good after a Q69 flop. However, Barry turned over QQ and, with no help on the turn and river, Louis was in tenth position. Darryl Herrick, New York, NY, who came to the table with the short stack, went all-in on the third hand and won with A2 but his KK on the next hand was topped by Luke Clark's AJ when an A came on the river. Luis Rodi from Sharon , MA, was not challenged in two all-ins but the third time Suad Kantarevic called with A4 and Luis's 3's were no good when a 4 came on the flop and he did not improve. Suad, from Chelsea, MA, also eliminated Raymond Griffen of Barataria, LA. Ray had 9d10d against Suad's A5 and after AAK on the flop and another K on the turn Ray claimed seventh. Suad got lucky and took out Peter Athanasoulis, Norwalk, CT, when he called Peter with KhJh. Peter had pocket 8's and, after a 389 flop, he had a set which was good until the river when Suad caught a flush. John Parker from College Park, MD, was faced with an all-in from Barry and called with 10's. Barry showed AJ and won after a 3J9 flop; John had to settle with fifth place. Barry was accumulating chips and went all-in with pocket J's. Saud, who had lost a major hand to Luke Clark and with this pot over 300k, called Barry with pocket 9's. With no help from the board, Suad took fourth. With three players left at the table, Barry had a commanding chip lead. Simon Gould from Philadelphia, PA, was short stacked and was soon all-in with QJ against Luke's pocket 5's. When the flop showed QAK, Simon had life but a 5 on the turn ended his night and he claimed $38,480 for third place. Luke, from East Falmouth, MA, and Barry traded chips with most of the advantage going to Barry. In the final hand, Luke called Barry's pocket 2's with A5. The tournament was over when the flop came Q22 to give Barry four deuces. Luke took $67,340 for second place.
