Tournament Report
FIRST TIME WINNER STEVEN ROSEN WINS $149,460!
The 2005 New England Poker Classic had a first time winner in a first
time event, as Steven Rosen of Armonk, NJ, captured first place and $149,460. He outdueled
Charlton, MA, resident, Wendell Barnes, in heads-up action. Wendell had established
a chip lead but, when Steve went all-in with KJ, Wendell called with QJ. A flop of
K76 gave Steven the chip advantage. Wendell was soon all-in with pocket 5's but Steven
called with pocket 10â??s and, with a flop of KK10, Steven had the championship trophy,
winner's jacket and prize money. Wendell collected $80,560 for his efforts.
Brett Richey, Allston, MA, was the third place finisher. Brett entered the final table as
the chip leader but his position slowly eroded throughout the day as he was unable to hit
the big hand. In the end, his pocket 5's were against Wendell's K9 and, with a 9 on the
flop, Brett's day was over. Hamilton, NJ, resident, Alan Ehrenworth, fought his way into
the fourth slot from second lowest chip position. He had earlier won sizable pots with AK
and AA versus AQ; however, his all-in with A10 was called by Wendell with AQ and a Q
on the flop left him with $29,680. Leonard Tannenbaum, Armonk, NY, also battled from
a short stack position to place fifth. His pocket 9's were not quite enough as he lost his
remaining chips to Steven Rosen who called his all-in with pocket 10's.
Christopher Bell of Raleigh, NC, as the short stack on the final table, showed great resiliency in finishing sixth. In earlier all-in situations with Brett, he had taken sizable pots with A10 versus AK (10 on the flop) and 109 versus 104 when his 9 kicker provided the edge. He gave considerable thought in calling Brettâ??s all-in with pocket 7's and was the winner of $16,960 when Wendell showed pocket 9's. Bo Toft, Yardley, Pa, went all-in with AQ over Wendell; but
Wendell, with pocket K's, called and Bo was claiming seventh. The eighth place finisher, Bryan
Schlein, Owings Mills, MD, who had earlier lost with AQ to Alanâ??s A's, went all-in with AJ and
was again confronted by Alan who produced AQ. Stephen Lateano of West Suffield, CT, was
also done in by Alan. He lost with AQ to AK and went all-in with Q8. Alan called with J10 and
Stephen felt hopeful after an 8 came on the flop but a 10 on the turn left him in ninth. Larry
Lawson, Patterson, NJ, lost the first hand of the final table to Alan. He had pocket 6's and Alan called his all-in with AK. A K on the flop left Larry as the short stack and he was soon out.
