Tournament Report

A field of 288 Omaha players began the quest for the title and the last man standing was 'Doc' Willard Noyes of Thompson, PA. The prize pool for the $500 Omaha Hi-Lo (8 or Better) event was $142,000 and Doc took home first place winnings of $47,925. He also took over first place in the Overall Player Award rankings; Doc, Dee Blair and Charles Balistreri are 1,2,3 with one point separating them.

It looks like a race to the finish! The final table began a little after 4 PM and it did not take long before there was a 10th place finisher. In the 2nd hand, Dan Mowczan from Sterling Heights, MI, was all-in; he turned over an A high flush but Billy Botchis, Niantic, CT, had Q's full. Dan collected $2,840 for his time at the table. Steve Hohn was the short stack at the table and he was able to survive several all-ins with split or scooped pots. In fact, he was able to make it to 8th spot. 'Detroit' Al Green from Weston, FL, was in 9th after Jim Newberry caught a wheel on the turn to top 'Detroit's' A's. He collected $3,195 for his finish. A short time later, Steve was all-in again but Doc had A's and Steve would take $3,550 home to Overland Park, KS.

Mike Salem, Hope Valley, RI, struggled to get cards all evening. He was finally all-in for his big blind ($6000). He had 8's and 43 for low but Doc turned over A's and A4 low to scoop the pot and leave Mike with 7th place money of $4,260. Mike's demise began a string of quick exits from the final table. Within 5 minutes Billy Botchis and Paul Laird from La Marque, TX, were both all-in and gone. Billy had A226 but received no help from the board and collected 6th place money of $5,680 when Pat Maher of Waltham, MA, showed two pair.

On the next hand, Pat caught a flush on the turn to top Paul Laird's A's up. Paul's take from the prize pool was $6,745. Doc eliminated Jim Newberry from Poolesville, MD, with a wheel. Jim played well to get to 4th place money of $9,585 after starting the final table as the second shortest stack. With three players left, the action heated up. Pat Maher and Steve Ross (both from Waltham, MA) were up against Doc Noyes, the chip leader.

Pat was the first to succumb when Doc caught a full house to his two pair. Pat had $14,555 for his 3rd place finish. Steve came back to even with Doc but could get no further. Doc chipped away at Steve's stack. After 4 hours of competition, Doc had Steve all-in and got two pair on the flop to leave Steve with 2nd place winnings of $26,270. Doc, who aided in a medical emergency situation on Monday, had overcome the entire field to collect the crystal trophy, leather jacket and $47,925!
