Tournament Report
| Twelve players, of the original 470 entered in the $500 Limit Hold'em event, returned
at 4 PM to resume their goal of reaching the final table. When Lou Marmo and Thomas Savitsky
fell by the wayside in 12th and 11th place respectively, the goal was reached and the war for the title began.
In the final battle, Darren Brandes from Clearwater, FL, and Chuck Giroux of Marlborough, MA,
duked it out until Darren was able to scratch out a well deserved victory. From the total prize pool of
$237,000, he will return to Florida with $74,655!
As the short stack on the final table and with the limits at $6000/$12000, Paul Sanchioni, Ashland,
MA, was not able to play many hands. He went all-in with AQ but Stuart Williams from Shirley,
NY, flopped a straight; Paul finished 10th and collected $4,740. When the limits went to $8000/$16000,
three players were out in quick succession. Dee Blair, the 7-Card Stud Hi-Lo Champion, had J's up but
Chuck had K's up and Dee would go back to Framingham, MA, with 9th place money of $5,332. Josh
Blanchfield, Boston, MA, had A4 to Matt Szymasek's AQ; Matt caught a Q on the turn and Josh was in
8th with $5,925. Jonathan Tare from New York City, NY, who finished 21st in the same event last year,
was all-in pre-flop with three way action and a pair of 7's. Darren had AJ and, with a J on the flop, relegated
Jonathan to 7th position; he took home $7,110.
Michael Gamerman from Foxboro, MA, played two hands with the limits at $10000/$20000. He
could not pair the board and was left with 6th place money of $8,888. Shortly thereafter, Rick Dolliver of
North Berwick, ME, had QJ to Chuck's AK and when a K appeared on the flop, Rick was in 5th place; he
won $10,665. Stuart Williams, Shirley, NY, survived several all-ins before a final confrontation with Darren.
He had 7's but Darren turned over 9's and Stu was in 4th and collecting $15,405. Matt Szymasek,
Smithfield, RI, took 3rd spot when Chuck rivered a straight; Matt's efforts were rewarded with $21,922.
Chuck was the chip leader for most of the day and he entered heads up action with a sizable lead.
Darren was able to pull even before Chuck again acquired most of the chips. However, he could not put
Darren away and Darren nibbled away at Chuck's stack. Chuck was finally forced all-in with a J4. The
flop came K10J to give him a pair. A 7 came on the turn and Darren, with Q8, was looking for help on the
river. When a 9 appeared, Chuck settled for 2nd place and $39,698. Darren, who spent thirteen hours on
the road from Florida, was pleased to take delivery of the crystal trophy, leather jacket and $74,655!
