Tournament Report

A field of 1245 began play on Wednesday hoping to strike gold and take home First Place prize money of $160,809. New Jersey resident Mike Jasman emerged victorious, coming back several times from near elimination. Mike stated that he has won two of the three tournaments he has played recently; quite a record! Twenty finalists returned at 4 PM on Thursday to resume play and the final table started a little before 8 PM. Shortly thereafter, Joe Simmons, Philadelphia, PA, and Eugene Ji, Rego Park, NY, were both all-in in three way action with Kyle Bowker. Joe was short stacked after losing most of his chips to Mike in a previous hand. The blinds and ante forced him all-in with 98; Eugene had a pair of A's but Kyle had A's up. Eugene took 9th place money of $14,051 because of a superior chip position. Joe won $12,490 for 10th place. Victor Mancini hung on for 8th spot. As the short stack at the final table, he caught an AK and went all-in; unfortunately for him, Ken Adams had pocket A's which held. Victor will return home to Cranston, RI, with $15,612. John Russell from Auburn, MA, survived one all-in with pocket 8's. But then his AQ ran up against Ken's pocket 6's and John was left in 7th position with $18,735. Brian Jersey of Westport, CT, was all-in a short time later with AQ. Ken called and, once again, turned over pocket 6's. Brian won $21,858 for his 6th place finish. The second shortest stack, Geoffrey Smith, Rocky Hill, CT, put up a spirited fight to finish 5th. He had A3 but Ken, with QJ, caught a straight on the turn to end Geoff's night; he collected $24,980. With three way action, Kyle Bowker, Walton, NY, and Ylon Schwartz were all-in with Ken. Ylon hit the heart flush on the river to leave Kyle in 4th position with $37,470 and to take a sizable amount of chips from Ken. Of the three players left, Mike had started with the fewest but now had a good lead over the others. He had earlier been all-in against Ylon with pocket 4's and against Ken with pocket A's. Both times he had doubled up and he credited those two hands as the turning point of his run to the title. Ylon, from Brooklyn, NY, had pocket 7's and was all-in against Mike with an A10. When an A appeared on the flop, Ylon was in 3rd position with $49,960. Ken, who hails from Washington, DC, used an 87 to take a chunk of Mike's chips but then the same cards were losers to Mike's Q's. In the final hand, Mike lured Ken all-in after he had flopped a straight. Ken could not match that hand and he was the 2nd place winner of $87,430.
