Tournament Report

A record field of 634 players entered this year's $1000 No-Limit event and, after almost 22 hours of competition, Michael Havens of Stamford, CT, emerged as the victorious champion! From the $638,000 prize pool Michael took home $188,210! With his win, he entered the top 10 in the Best Overall Player Award competition at number 7. Josh Blanchfield with 74 points remains at the top of the list. Michael entered the final table as the chip leader; his lead was challenged and he fell back several times but in the end he was able to regain a lead he never relinquished. The 2nd place finisher, Donald Emery, did a lot of work at the table by eliminating 4 opponents but he could not top Michael. In the final hand, Don had A6 to Michael's 4's. The flop was 53A to give him the A's but when a 2 appeared on the river to give Michael a straight, Donald was heading home to Myrtle Beach, SC, with $98,890. With 23 players returning at 4 PM of Sunday, the final table did not begin until just after 6:30 PM. Three hours later only 3 players had been eliminated. Habib Azar from New York, NY, was all-in with 6's; unfortunately for him, John Fanning, Hingham, MA, had 7's. Habib got no help from the board and he claimed 10th position for $12,760. Vinny Napolitano of Garden City, NY, was the first to be taken out by Don. Vinny was all-in with K9 and Don, with A9 ended with A's full; Vinny was in 9th with $14,355. Anthony Camillery, Walden, NY, had K3 but James Stenella had AJ; there was no improvement for Anthony and he took home $15,950 for 8th spot. With the blinds at 6K/12K, Jim Stenella had A6 to Paul Fehlig's J5 but, with a 46JKK board, Jim had to settle for 7th place and $19,140. John Fanning night ended when his KQ lost to Don's AJ but the hand that started his exit from the table was when he called Ray Lin's 181K all-in with AK. Ray had J9 and proceeded to flop a straight. John collected 6th place money of $22,330. Ray Lin, New York, NY, also fell to Don when he was forced all-in with 107; Don had AJ, made two pair and relegated Ray to 5th position with $25,520. Don next took on Peter Gilmore, Plaistow, NH, and he called Peter's forced all-in of 910 with an AK. The board was no help to Peter who took home 4th place money of $38,280. Third was claimed by St Louis, MO, resident, Paul Fehlig, who quietly worked his way from second shortest stack to 3rd position. He could not top Don's Q's. His reward for his hard work was $55,825. With so many players to overcome, Michael Havens persevered to the end and was the one who claimed the commemorative leather jacket, the crystal trophy and $188,210!
