Tournament Report

An even hundred finalists in the $200 No-Limit Hold'em Shoot-out began their quest for the title at 10 AM. All were single table winners and each had $500 in hand from yesterday. By 5 PM, the final table was set and, after an hour break for dinner, the competition began for the top prize of $53,856.

The prize pool for this year's event was $197,600 with 988 entries. The $200 Shoot-out at WPF 2004 had 849 entrants and a prize pool of $171,800. The final table began with the blinds at $200/$400 with a $75 ante. Six hands into the action with the blinds now at $300/$600 ($100 ante), Andrew Kelley, Rehoboth, MA, went all-in with As7s and Alan Miller of Sharon, MA, called immediately with K's. Andrew was thinking straight with an 896 flop but nothing thereafter left him in 10th place and winnings of $2,244.

Paul Giacobbe from Meriden, CT, the final table short stack, held on for fifteen hands. Paul went all-in couple of times and was not called. The third time his 9s8s were challenged by Wooyang Lin, who called with Q's. An eight on the turn gave Paul some hope but the river was no help and he collected $2,992 for 9th place. Three hands later, Allen Blais, Hartford, CT, pushed all-in with his last $3700 and was called by John Trifone of Newington, CT. Allen showed J9 and John, with AQ, took the pot with a board of 83KA8. Allen was rewarded with $3,740 for his efforts.

The blinds were raised to $400/$800 ($100 ante) and Alan Miller was all-in pre-flop with a pair of 4's. Pat Poels from Phoenix, AZ, called with AK. When a K appeared on the flop Alan took 7th place and $4,488. Three hands later, Wendell Barnes from Charlton, MA, the $2000 No-Limit Champion at the New England Poker Classic, was under the gun and all-in. He had AQ but Pat Poels' pair of 7's held up for the win. Wendell took home 6th place money of $5,236. Three way action eliminated Judith Green of Weston, FL. She had A3 against John's A8 and Chuck Delvecchio's J9. The J9 took the money when the 9 paired and no A showed.

Judith would go home with $5,984 and 5th place. Chuck, who hails from New Haven, CT, hung on 4th spot and $8,976. With the blinds at $600/$1200 ($200 ante), Wooyang bet $3600 (with Q's) and Chuck went all-in ($12K) with AQ; the board was not friendly and Chuck was out. Of the three players remaining, Pat Poels had shown great resiliency in coming back from a short stack position at the start of the final table. He finally ran out of luck, and chips, when his Q10 could not overcome John's KJ. Pat had third place and $17,952 to show for his efforts. The blinds went to $800/$1600 ($200 ante) and heads up action began between Wooyang and John with the chip counts virtually identical. Wooyang took down a couple of good sized pots when his all-ins were not called. The final hand had John betting $5800, Wooyang raising to 20K, John all-in and Wooyang calling.

John turned over 8c8h and Wooyang had Ah10d. The flop was 2dKh5d, the turn was a Jd and the river a 8d giving Wooyang a flush and the win! John's reward was 2nd place money of $29,920. Wooyang Lin will return to his hometown of Morristown, NJ, with a commemorative leather jacket, the crystal trophy and $53,856!
