Tournament Report
OVER 1,100 PLAYERS PARTICIPATE IN BORGATA POKER OPEN DAY 1 EVENT
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (September 13, 2005) - Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, the preeminent casino-hotel destination on the East Coast, took another step in cementing its position as one of the top gaming venues when it kicked off its annual Borgata Poker Open on Sunday. The competition drew a record-breaking 1,100 players from across the East Coast, including former Saturday Night Live personality and television/film star, Norm Macdonald, for the tournament's debut $500 event.
1,109 players battled it out on the felt for a total prize pool of $554, 500 dollars. The final 100 players who survived the poker frenzy made the money, taking home more than just an amazing experience.
Sunday's premiere tournament showed why the Borgata's events are drawing huge numbers of competitors. Players began the long journey to the big cash at 11 a.m. and action continued well into the night, finally finishing the day's happenings at 2:30 am. At the conclusion of the evening, there were 34 players left to continue the quest to become champion and win a huge cash payout.
Play resumed on Monday and saw eventual champion, James Maglio, take home first prize for his stellar play. The 'Rocky-like' champion, who ironically hails from Philadelphia, used his short stack of 96,500 chips to beat all challengers in his path and take the first place prize. For outlasting the field in this 22-hour marathon, Maglio took home a whopping $149, 715 cash prize.
Rye, New Hampshire resident, Jeff Cohen, who started Monday in third place finished the day with a worthy second place finish and taking home a cool $77,630. Finishing third was Fabio Dajata who also battled back from a short stack of 91, 500 chips, collecting $44,360 for his efforts.
The premiere of the Borgata Poker Open demonstrated that players are enjoying the competition and surroundings of this beautiful venue and service-dedicated facility. According to the Borgata's director of poker operations Stan Strickland, the event is supplying a unique opportunity for players. 'The tournament is off to a great start. Getting over 1,100 players to buy into a $500 event is something you don't see very often in a full service casino like Borgata.'
Things will only heat up later in the week as the buy-ins to events increase and the cash payouts continue to grow with record numbers of players expected throughout the 12-day event series. Strickland believes this will be the biggest tournament at Borgata to date. 'I'm sure that we will have big crowds the remainder of the week and look forward to a World Poker Tour Event next week that will offer a purse of $5 million.”
