Tournament Report
| ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (September 14, 2005)-The action was fast and furious during the second tournament of the 2005 Borgata Poker Open yesterday, when 558 players took the tables and kicked off the $750 buy-in event at 11 a.m. Monday morning. Following the pattern of Sunday's $500 tournament, day two featured a broad spectrum of players with different skill levels including some top professionals, a number of semi-pros, and plenty of home-game heroes trying to get a taste of big money.
After a grueling 24 hour marathon, spaced only by a few hours of needed rest, John McCann of Boothwyn, Pa., captured the bracelet and first place prize of $121, 365. McCann eventually outlasted wily veterinarian Brian Donahue of Stafford, Va. for the number one spot. Luck was on the side of McCann in the final hour, but there was no shame in finishing second for Donahue as he collected $65, 914 for his efforts.
Despite the varying skill levels, the competition throughout the day was intense, leaving many players spent by the time the final two tables were decided. According to Walter Carbone, who finished the day in fourth place, the long day really took its toll. 'The tournament was great, but it wears you out. I love it, but it's really tiring,' he said.
Some players however had no problem with the long hours. Houston's Mark Ellerbe came to play in the early-week events because his two sons play high school football on the weekends and said he felt energized by the tournament action. Despite only playing for two years, Ellerbe finished in seventh place after surviving an early bad beat that left him with only 300 chips.
The competition also featured a tinge of international flavor with several of the cashing players coming to the United States specifically for the Borgata Poker Open.
One notable pro, Dublin's Padraig Parkinson, known for his third-place finish in the 1999 World Series of Poker, was thrilled by the way the tournament was run and had nothing but great things to say about the event.
'I think the structure of the tournament was marvelous. It has to be one of my favorite structures. For a $750 dollar tournament, we played for fifteen hours yesterday (Monday) to get from 558 players down to 27. That's very fair. You've got twice the chips at the start of the event in comparison to similar events at the World Series of Poker,' Parkinson said.
According to Parkinson who finished in 16th place, the best part of the day's action was the level of play. 'The structure of one hour level increases gave the skill factor a good chance to come through,' Parkinson said.
