Tournament Report
Ted Garner Has a Problem with Winning
Tunica Mississippi (January 11, 2006)
Ted Garner has a problem. But it's the kind of problem we'd all like to have. He is retiring later this month and his retirement party is scheduled to be held during the Gold Strike World Poker Open Main Event. As the winner of Event #1, Ted Garner not only wins $95,311 and the bracelet, but he also wins an entry into the $10,000 event. But we're confident that he'll find a solution for his new dilemma.
The final table action got off to a fast start when Chris Cellery found pocket queens on the very first hand. Unfortunately he ran into Garner's pocket aces and Cellery was our 9th place finisher. Minutes later, James Kish pushed his short stack in with A6, getting the sheriff's call by Greg Brooks' K4. A four improved Brooks on the turn and the river couldn't save Kish from going out in 8th place.
This was Doug Saab's 5th trip to a WPO final table. But when his AQ didn't improve against Greg Brooks' JJ, he had to settle for 7th place. Brooks soon followed in 6th place when all his money went in on a flopped middle pair only to discover Joe Bartholdi sitting with top pair.
Sid Harold started the day as the short stack, but he wasn't leaving without a fight. Harold tripled up early in the tournament when his AJ found a J on the river to snatch the pot from Garner, who's A9 had caught a 9 on the turn. Harold looked like he was going to do it again when he pushed all-in with AK against Roger Foley's suited QJ. A king fell on the flop, but a runner runner flush sent Sid Harold to the rail in 5th place.
Action slowed when we got down to four players, but Roger Foley eventually succumbed in 4th place. Carlos Fuentes followed in 3rd; first doubling up Joe Bartholdi on Bartholdi's flopped straight.
Young Joe Bartholdi already has an enviable tournament track record with two WSOP final tables under his belt. He has committed to play a heavier tournament schedule in 2006 and he's obviously off to a great start. But today Joe had to settle for second place. Although Bartholdi started heads-up play with a slight chip advantage, Ted Garner kept chipping away at Bartholdi's lead. When the final hand came down, Garner had a slight lead on Bartholdi. Garner's pocket tens held up to Bartholdi's AJ, and Ted Garner scored the bracelet.
Maybe Ted Garner should have his retirement party here in Tunica.
