Tournament Report
| Jeremy Phipps and the Mississippi Slick
Most poker players know that the 'Big Slick' is the ace king. But here on Old Man River, the deuce three is known as the 'Mississippi Slick.' So it was a fitting end when Jeremy Phipps brought home the bracelet here at the Gold Strike's WPO Event #4 with the hometown favorite.
Our first final table victim was Timothy Back, Jr. when his KQ was dominated by chip leader, Scooter Crutcher's, 'Big Slick.' Timothy Back, JR finishes in 9th place. James Mijalis moneyed in this event, finishing in 42nd place. His wife Angela, went on to the final table. But Angela had few cards and opportunities this day, and finished in 8th place.
Brian Taylor felt pretty good when his pocket aces faced Rukhsana Guevarra's JT – that is until Guevarra caught two pairs, leaving Taylor short stacked. Brian Taylor moved the rest of his chips in with AJ. But Jeremy Phipps took down the pot with AQ, and Brian Taylor finished in 7th place.
Rukhsana Guevarra finished in 6th place when her A7 met Scooter Crutcher's pocket tens - and ultimately his set of tens. Jeremy Phipps had better luck with his A7. David Tran moved all-in on the flop with an open ended straight draw which never materialized and Phipps' paired seven won out. David Tran goes out in 5th place
Poker players will tell you that pocket jacks are a dangerous hand; too good to laydown, but often not good enough to prevail. And it was the dreaded jacks that put out Scooter Crutcher in 4th place. All the money went in on a flop with a queen and unfortunately for Crutcher, Jeremy Phipps had one.
Noah Nodine was running out of ammo and pushed all-in, getting called by both An Tran and Jeremy Phipps. The hand was checked down to the river, with Jeremy Phipps taking it with top pair. Noah Nodine finished in 3rd place.
Jeremy Phipps and An Tran chatted for awhile, but there was no hand shake. Even with An Tran's stellar tournament track record, Jeremy Phipps wanted to battle this one out to the end. And it was a battle won with the acclaimed 'Mississippi Slick.' On a board of 2267Q, Phipps' all-in bet was called by Tran. Tran showed the A7 for two pair. But Phipps' 23 had made trip deuces. An Tran finished in 2nd place. Along with the 1st place prize pool, Jeremy Phipps takes home a WPO bracelet and a $10,000 entry into the WPT/WPO Main Event.
