Tournament Report

Gary Gibbs Prevails at Volatile Table

Tunica Mississippi (January 16, 2006) Gary Gibbs started the final table of the Gold Strike World Poker Open's Event #6 just below average in chip count. When the event was drawing to a close, Gibbs found himself heads-up with a 3-to-2 chip disadvantage. But this seasoned player and 2004 WSOP Seniors Event bracelet holder was unfazed, and Gary Gibbs triumphed in Event #6.

This was a volatile table, accompanied by large chip swings and frequent leader changes. The second hand of the tournament saw starting chip leader Cahn Phan lose half his stack, and chip lead, to Gary Gibbs when Gibbs' pocket aces made short work of Phan's suited KT. David McClure, starting today with the shortest stack was next to take the chip lead when his AK found a king on the flop to best Gary Gibb's pocket queens.

Darren Spradlin was the first to exit when his pocket sixes ran into Gary Gibb's AK. Gibb's made a Broadway straight and Darren Spradlin finished in 9th place. Cahn Phan made an all-in move with a suited 65 but was called down by Jesse Maupin's pocket jacks. The jacks held and Cahn Phan finished in 8th place.

Crippled by an earlier hand where his pocket tens were dominated by David McClure's pocket jacks, Rob Dabolt-Brind gets it all-in with a suited QJ. Big blind, Tom McCormick makes the obligatory call - and also makes a six high straight - put Rob Dabolt-Brind out in 7th place. Matt Overstreet was the next to go in 6th. And the suited QJ also faired ill for Jesse Maupin who lost a big pot with it against Tom McCormick's ace high and then went out in a subsequent hand in 5th place.

We played four-handed for over two hours, but eventually Kenny Brown succumbed in 4th place when his KT ran into David McClure's pocket rockets. Tom McCormick looked like he was in good shape when his pocket kings were pitted against David McClure's A8. But McClure ended up with a wheel and Tom McCormick exits in 3rd place.

David McClure started today with the shortest stack. But by the time we got heads-up, McClure was our chip leader - but not for long. Gary Gibbs doubled up when his AQ (versus McClure's A4) made a straight. Minutes later, McClure put it all-in with AT only to run into another Gibb's AQ. Gary Gibbs made a full house and David McClure takes 2nd place.

Gary Gibbs successfully negotiated his way through this turbulent final table to take home $116,251 in first place prize money, a $10,000 entry into the Main Event and the WPO bracelet.
