Tournament Report

The inaugural event of the 2006 Foxwoods Poker Classic started with a bang as 924 players put up $300 each to enter the No-Limit Hold'em Shoot-out.

Five sessions were played on Monday and the 95 single table winners (of $500 each) came back at 10 AM Tuesday to determine the championship. The multi-table tournament was finally decided after midnight when Robert Miller of Colchester, VT, claimed the title over Adam Lippert. Robert will return to Vermont with the championship trophy, commemorative jacket and $70,107!

The final table began with 9 players because there was a tie for 10th position. Roy Ahlquist, Taunton, MA, and Edward Tyler, Farmington, ME, were both eliminated on the same hand. Roy had J's but lost to Q6 when a Q came on the river. Ed ('I never win with AJ') had AJ and lost to a 67 after 89 on the flop and a 10 on the turn.

Ed and Roy each took home $2,824. Ninth place was taken by Gary Styczynski who started the final table as the short stack. He had 10's but Adam Lippert ended up with trip Q's to send Gary back to Pearl River, NY, with $3,895. Joseph Cote of Wethersfield, CT, was the 8th place winner of $4,868. His K2 lost to Yves Hentic's QJ when the board came AJ77J.

However, the hand which Joseph will remember occurred earlier when he went all in with J4 after a 48J flop. Tom Arrigoni called with J9 and, when a K came on the turn and the river, his 9 kicker left Joseph with $300. Jonathan Harcut, who hails from Quaker Hill, CT, was the 7th place winner of $5,842. As the second shortest stack, he held on as long as he could. With the blinds going up he went all-in with 5's; unfortunately, Francesco Zangari had K's and Jonathan was out.

Yves Hentic was all-in with pocket 9's; Robert called with AK. The QJ10 flop left Yves with $900; he won several all-ins and rebuilt his stack but he finally succumbed when his QJ lost to Robert's AJ. Yves would return to Southampton, NY, with $6,816. Michael Amendola, East Haven, CT, was hoping that his KQ would prevail when he called Adam's all-in. That was not to be, as Adam turned over pocket A's and Michael collected 5th place money of $7,790.

The final four played a considerable time before Francesco Zangari was forced to go all-in. He had lost most of his chips in an earlier hand to Tom and, when he caught pocket 2's, he decided to make a stand. Robert called with A8 and when an A came on the turn, Francesco would take 4th place money of $11,684 back to Glen Cove, NY. Local player, Tom Arrigoni of Killingworth, CT, went all-in with K9 but Robert called with AK and Tom had to settle for 3rd place worth $23,369.

Heads-up play began with Robert holding a commanding chip lead. Adam, a native of Brooklyn, NY, was finally forced all-in with 75; Robert was not much better off with 97 but a 9 on the flop gave Robert the victory. Adam can soothe his loss with 2nd place money of $38,948. The 2006 Foxwoods Poker Classic is off to a fantastic start!!
