We’re ‘Crazy’ about Poker as Ireland’s first €1 million Poker Tournament gets off to a flyer

Local hero Eamon ‘Crazy Daisy’ O’Grady tops leader board; former Republic of Ireland football star Tony Cascarino plays a blinder; Michael ‘Beppe’ Greco heads back to Eastenders empty handed

Dublin went poker crazy yesterday as 339 of the world’s finest poker players sat down to play in Europe’s oldest poker tournament – the Paddy Power Poker Irish Poker Open – being held at Jurys Ballsbridge Hotel in Dublin.

The competition played down to 83 players last night and well-known local player Eamon ‘Crazy Daisy’ O’Grady held the chip lead going into day two.

Another Irishman Eoin Tobin ended the day in second place and the highly regarded professional poker player and journalist Roy ‘The Boy’ Brindley chased close in third place.

Tony Cascarino played a blinding game and sits poised just outside the top 10 ready to challenge for a seat at the final table – and the €350,000 first prize.

The total prize pool was boosted to €1,068,000 when sponsor Paddy Power Poker added €51,000 making the Irish Poker Open the biggest sporting payday in Ireland this year.

Michael ‘Beppe’ Greco, the former Eastenders star busted out before he could accumulate a reasonable stack of chips and heads back to London empty handed.

The competition plays down to the final six players today.
