Tournament Report

Mario Donoso wins Majestic Poker Tour event in Panama

After three days of play Mario Donoso beat out a field of 97 players in Panama to capture his first poker championship along with $75,000 and a WSOP main event package for Las Vegas in July. The event was the best organised of the Majestic Tournaments to date with strong signs that this tour will be a major fixture on Latin American and perhaps increasingly American poker player's calendars in years to come.

The final table took over 6 hours to complete. Martin Virgen was the first to go in 9th place followed shortly thereafter by Arturo Morales who was making his third final table appearance out of three MPT events he has played in. Samuel Maya was next to go and then it was the turn of luckless Pierre Serhal who had been so close to taking the chip lead when his Aces were cracked on the river.

Tomas Koo was also learning that it was not to be. He was sitting on a nice stack when he brought Aces up against Paulo Carillo's AQ only to loose to a flush. He then found himself all in with AK against Bob Binsky's KQ only for a Q to flop and he went out in 5th.

Eduardo Benitez was next to go when he pushed shortstacked with A9 and Bob Binsky called with K7 from the big blind. A seven on the flop sealed his fourth place finish. But it wasn't to last for Bob, he reraised all in with 22 against Paulo Carrillo who called quickly with AJ, the J was the first card out and Bob was out leaving the two Venezuelan's to fight for the championship.

Paulo had a slight chip lead throughout the early phase of the heads up battle and was desperate not to get back to back 2nd places after finished runner up in Peru. But it wasn't to be. Paulo moved all in with 66 and was called by Mario who held A10, an Ace fell on the flop and he lost 95% of his chips. He was then forced to move all in on the very next hand and ran straight into Mario's KK. Mario's jubilant screams were heard well into the night!
