Day 1 of the Australasian Poker Championships at CROWN Casino in Melbourne,
One hundred and two players paid the AUD $400 entry fee to play the opening event Limit Holdem on Sunday the 19th of August. Keith Sloan Poker Operations Manager proudly announced, “a record entry “ for the event. Cards were in the air at 12:32 pm as we all got down to it. It was a fairly typical wintry day outside for Melbourne at this time of the year, but inside in the card room no-one much cared – there was money to be won.
The room currently has 16 tables but should soon be expanding its area to accommodate the next two Championships which will be held in January from now on – I can assure you a much more pleasant time of the year to see Melbourne. The main events for the next two championships will be a $5000 NLHE and in 2002 a $10,000 buy-in NLHE event, many European players already booking spots for the 2002 event.
Today though just a friendly Limit Holdem Tournament to get us underway.
The story of the day seems to involve Americans ( nearly always happens on the first day ). For those of you who know Kirk Morrison, he seems to have picked himself a roving the world poker playing role. Finding himself in Minnesota recently he befriended a youngster called Adam Csalleny. Adam, a computer science astro-physics (sp?) student, made the trip to Melbourne as Kirk’s protege (his words). Adam, only 19, by my reckoning can’t have played much Casino poker let alone Tournament poker in the US - if I had known this before the tournament I would have attempted to get some money on at any odds to get to he final table.
Well if you have read the results or report you will know he came second, but you had to be there to see the hands. The most stand-out one I witnessed was second or third hand on the final table. Adam in small blind 1K, made 4K by John Maitland about 3rd to speak, folded to Adam who makes it 3bets, BB folds, John reraises Adam calls 10K in pot. Flop 5 4 7 rainbow John bets Adam calls.. Turn 8 John bets Adam calls last card 6 Adam bets, the straight on the board, John calls, Adam flips up 9 10 offsuit nut straight.
Probably the other story of the day was John coming back from this to finish third a very creditable result.
Just a word about the eventual winner Kevin Kelsall from Adelaide in South Australia. Kevin mentioned afterwards that this was his first tournament victory at CROWN and seriously you would be hard pressed to find a more genuine and deserving character than Kevin (has Poker ability too) and I congratulate him on the win.
Draw poker half-pot today, not for me (realised that although I’d been playing this since I was five I had NO idea what I was doing) I’ll be trying to find some pickings in the live games.
All the Best
THE BARRACUDA ( Chris Newton )
