WHERE IN THE GREEN?
By Mike Paulle

On St. Patrick's Day, we knew there would be a lot of green to wear, we just didn't know wherein whose pockets the green was goin'.

There were 324 entrants and 273 rebuys in the $100 Buy-In, Limit Hold'em, for a total prize pool of $59,700. 3 tables were paid, a total of 27 players.

Some of the Notables who played: Rod Peate, Barbara Enright, Eskimo Clark, Kathy Liebert, Mario Esquerra, Robert Turner, Hon Le, David Pham, Bev Kruskol, Hasan Habib, David Levi, Jun Sin, Allen Cunningham, Toto Leonidas, Van Pham, Gary Lent, Anthony Tran, Macram Merhom, Charlie Satoot, Amir Vahedi, David Plastik, Avner Levy, Jimmy Touch, Danny Morgan, Sirous B, Freddie Dak, Freddie Gaspari, Billy Hansen, Reggie Cardiel, George Marlowe, Minh Li, Albert Umel, General Poy, Andre Maloof, Ron Ryneal and the ever-elegant Brenda Nelson.

Chris Karagulleyan was three hands from the big blind and didn't think he'd find a better spot to make his move. Turned out his move was to the rail in 28th place, one out of the money. Chris had K Q against the blinds. He got all his $3,800 in against Rene Caspillo with $3,900 in the big blind. Rene turned over pocket Queens. The several short stacks got to take a breath and get paid.

To set up the Final Table: Tom Ritz tried the pocket Queens and took a horrible beat for 10th place. With Michael Hu at the other table with only one $500 chip, Ernie Sabastian pushed $9,200 into the pot to call Ritz' all-in reraise of a Sabastian raise. Ernie had the Q J of Spades and was drawing very thin against the Ladies. No Worries! A spade comes on the flop, another on the turn and the runner runner is completed by a third Spade on the river.

With only one chip, Michael Hu's prayers were answered when he won the button. You'd hear no cry from Hu about that. He'd get a free round to hope someone would go out. Better yet, Vince Castaldo was all-in for his big blind. But Castaldo found pocket Jacks in his no-look hand and doubled up. Hu was left in his big blind with a 9 3 against Ernie Sabastian's pocket Queens.

No stranger to Final Tables, Dan Heimiller had a strange thing happen to him. He didn't win a hand. Starting out 2nd in chips, the fast playing Heimiller got to leave fast in 8th. A key hand for Dan was when he couldn't beat a 9 high all-in from Chris Beshlin Taking a shot, Heimiller three bet a raise by Kevin Kim with an A J in the small blind. Kim had pocket 10's and put Dan all-in on the flop. Neither overcard came, and a shell-shocked Heimiller went low into the night.

The other big name at the table, Phillip Luong, was the next one out in 7th. Oddly, it was also an A J that eliminated Phillip. But in Luong's hand both overcards came. That's what got him in trouble. Chris Beshlin raised and Phillip reraised. When the Ace came on the flop, Luong checked and smooth called the Beshlin bet. With a Jack on the turn, Phillip put his hand to his head pretending he didn't like the card then check raised Chris. Beshlin reraise Luong all-in and turned over pocket Aces. Luong joined Heimiller in the non-wearin' of the green.

It was 3:15 in the morning, St. Paddy's Day was now long over. With the blinds about to go to $10k/$20k, the six remaining players felt their four-leaf clovers wouldn't help them much so they makde a chip count deal. Kevin Kim wore $14,135 and the title. Chris Beshlin wore $9,045, Henry Tu wore $7,225. Ernie Sabastian wore $6,770. Vincezo Castaldo wore $5,225 and Jose Carlos wore $5,060. The lawyer, Chris Beshlin, negotiated a deal with Kevin Kim buying the trophy for $200.

Wherein the green? Where it belonged. In the pockets of the players with the luck of the Irish.
