FEEL THE BURN
By Mike Paulle
Our winner today is nicknamed the "chip burner" but it was everyone else who
felt the heat.
There were 92 entrants and 73 rebuys in the $100 Buy-In, Stud, for a total
prize pool of $16,500. 1 table was paid, a total of 8 players.
Some of the Notables who played: Brent Carter, Dan Heimiller, Marsha
Waggoner, Dirty Wally, Hon Le, Bev Kruskol, David Levi, Gary Lent, Danny
Morgan, Ken Davis, Joe Chiracosta, JJ Volpe, Frank Rite, Mike Sales, John
Henson, Herb Stein, Alex Papachatzakis, TNT and the effervescent Spring
Cheong.
To set up the Final Table: With his father looking on balefully directly
across from him, Tony Cernuto made a play 'Miami' John Cernuto probably
wouldn't have made. 'Miami' John has been at more final tables in major
events than anyone in poker the last 10 years. Young Tony is still trying to
learn how his father does it. With Larry Rosenblum having only four chips,
Tony could have waited one more hand at least. But instead he went all-in
with a pair of fives against Andre Maloof. Andre had an eight up. Maloof's
pair of eights held up and Tony Cernuto finished 9th, one out of the money.
FINAL TABLE
17 mins left of 40 min. The ante is $300. Bring-in is $500.
Playing $2,000/$4,000
| Player | Hometown | Chip Count |
| Seat 1 'Miami' John Cernuto | Las Vegas NV | $18,500 |
| Seat 2 Dudley Rudd | Downey CA | $35,200 |
| Seat 3 Larry Rosenblum | Malibu CA | $400 |
| Seat 4 Andre Maloof | Burbank CA | $21,100 |
| Seat 5 Robert Turner | Long Beach CA | $6,000 |
| Seat 6 Thanh Nguyen | Northridge CA | $5,400 |
| Seat 7 Chuck 'Big Dog' Cannon | Mentone CA | $8,600 |
| Seat 8 Clint Moore | Covina CA | $10,300 |
With only four chips, Larry Rosenblum was grateful just to be here. Larry had
been asking for 9th place to get something, anything, but was refused.
Rosenblum had even asked Tony Cernuto to split 8th place money. Instead Larry
got it all. All-in with split 6's, Rosenblum wilted in 8th when Dudley Rudd
made Aces up.
Anyone who's played in the LA area knows how hot Andre Maloof can get. Thanh
Nguyen took split Kings and his last $1,700 up against Maloof's middle cards.
Catching runner runner for a 10 high straight, Andre showed Nguyen the door
in 7th.
In the most interesting hand of the Final Table, 'Miami' John Cernuto tried
to talk Andre Maloof off a pot. Big Mistake! John had the bring-in with a
deuce up. Andre raised. "I'll only call if I have deuces with an Ace,"
Cernuto said. He looked at his hand and called saying, "I have deuces with an
Ace." There might have been a reason Maloof didn't believe him. Andre had
pocket deuces with an eight up. Maloof caught a deuce on the turn. Now he
REALLY didn't believe him as Cernuto caught an Ace on 4th street. In what
became a huge pot, the cold deck was complete for Cernuto when he made Aces
over 5's only to have Maloof fill up with another eight giving the ex-air
traffic controller his flight schedule in 6th.
Making his first Final Table in a major, Clint Moore was properly intimidated
by the lineup he saw. Going all-in with his case money, Clint could only hope
for Moore but didn't get it. His Aces lost to who else? Andre Maloof made 9's
and 7's on the river.
The 'Big Dog' had no bite at this table. Chuck Cannon was fodder for Robert
Turner when Turner made trip 6's on 4th street. When Turner 'the chip burner'
isn't betting you know you are in trouble. Robert slow-played his set until
Cannon was all-in with Jacks and was shot out in 4th.
After turning everyone's deal proposals down when he was chip leader, Dudley
Rudd didn't get much sympathy from Andre Maloof and Robert Turner when Rudd
wanted to make a deal. He was offered $3,175 as the low stack. Rudd didn't
think that was enough to do Dudley right. He asked for $3,400. When Andre
Maloof said play on, Rudd went all-in with pocket 6's against Robert Turner
who made Aces up.
When Robert Turner took the chip lead away from Andre Maloof heads up, Turner
saved $5,000 to $4,500 for Maloof. They played for $895, the title and the
TOC qualification. Fresh from his 'Best All-Around Player' performance at the
Bicycle Club last week, Robert 'Chip Burner' Turner made Maloof feel the burn
with running Spades for a flush to roast Andre Maloof's Queens up.
