OMAHA PLAYERS ANONYMOUS
By Mike Paulle

Of the 50 'Notable' Omaha Hi-Lo players who started this event, only one got into the money. This is the biggest wipeout of 'name' tournament players in this reporter's experience. Whoever said the same players win all the time?

There were 162 entrants and 129 rebuys in the $100 Buy-In, Omaha Hi-Lo, for a total prize pool of $29,100. 2 tables were paid, a total of 18 players.

Some of the Notables who played: 'Miami' John Cernuto, Kathy Liebert, Mario Esquerra, Marsha Waggoner, Robert Turner, Brent Carter, Andre Maloof, Bev Kruskol, David Levi, Kathy Kolberg, Earl Kim, Annie Brown, Rusty Mandap, Brandon King, Spring Cheong, Van Pham, Gary Lent, Amir Vahedi, Danny Morgan, Sirous B, Frank Rite, Earl Exman, Dan Lumello, John Inashima, Herb Stein, Donald Halpern, Kenny Davis, Sophin Chea, Justin Westmoreland, Binh Ta, Freddie Gaspari, George Marlowe, Zorro Zdanowich, David Kelly, John Henson, Tom Lockhart, Albert Umel and the greatest Omaha Hi-Lo 'name' of them all, Steve Badger.

Two bricks in a row cost Jun Parado a chance at 18th place. He went all-in on an A 3 low draw against Jane Paquette. The flop came 10 8 4. Jane had a J 9 8 2 and made 8's full when an 8 turned and a Jack rivered.

To set up the Final Table: Dave Dlubac ran into a wall with his A 2 all-in. With a 2 on the flop, Dlubac was drawing nearly dead to Keith Yarbrough's A A 6 3 double suited.

When Dan Abrans survived his first all-in, Frank Hamamy was demoted to the lowest stack. Frank went all-in and made Kings up only to lose to Walter Smiley's Aces up.

Tournament inexperience showed in 8th on Denfield Eudelle when he didn't wait for the short stacks to take their blinds. Denfield couldn't get off a hand when he flopped top pair with Queens. Keith Yarbrough had pocket Aces.

When the flop came 6 3 6, Keith Yarbrough bet out. Pat Castellucio was one of the callers. "You don't believe me?" Keith said. Evidently Pat, with four overcards to the board, didn't. Yarbrough flopped a full house with a 6 3 and Castellucio paid him off in 7th.

The beneficiary of all this largess was Dan Abrans with two chips. Dan had a lead on his all-in hand for 6th place when his King hit, but Jane Paquette caught an Ace on the river.

The $1,500/$3,000 blinds were starting to tell on Raymundo Chavez. He went all-in when he made Kings and deuces. It was 'Adios' for Chavez in 5th when Jane Paquette turned over Kings and fives.

Early, Keith Yarbrough was running over this table. Keith had nearly half the chips and the other players looked like deer in his headlights. Then, suddenly, Jane Paquette took over. In an amazing turn of momentum, Paqutte whooped up on Yarbrough like a red-headed stepchild. Every bet he made, she raised. Every check, she bet. In under an hour, all his Yarbrough's formally immense stack was now in front of Paquette. On his last hand for a disappointing 4th place, Paquette and a better high by Rick Weinberger chopped Yarbrough up with a better low.

Walter Smiley is so unpretentious you'd never know he won a World Series bracelet in 1978. Today, Walter Smiley made one of the greatest comebacks in tournament history. With three players left, Smiley had one chip left to call a raise of his small blind. Jane Paquette had over 200 chips left. Walter called the raise and won the side pot, then went a mind-bending rush to win almost a third of the chips. With the stacks nearly even, a three-way split was negotiated. Jane Paquette got the title and $7,590. Walter Smiley won $6,515 and Rick Weinberger took down $6,265.

The only name player in the money, Walter Smiley, closed the meeting of the Omaha Players Anonymous in magnificent style.
