LOCAL HERO RAJ PATEL TAKES 1ST PLACE PRIZE OF $1,298,405!

The loud and enthusiastic crowd was almost evenly divided in supporting two local players in their pursuit of First Place in the 2007 Foxwoods Poker Classic $10000 No-Limit Championship.
This World Poker Tour event featured heads-up play between Raj Patel of Rocky Hill, CT, and Paul Matteo of Plainville, CT. Raj, the final table chip leader, ended up taking it all after a spirited match that featured great hands and Paul's run from one of the shorter stacks to 2nd place. Raj Patel was the winner of $1,298,405 which includes a $25,500 entry into the WPT Championship event in Las Vegas.
Paul began his run as he doubled up early with K3 versus the AJ of Tony 'Bagels' Cavezza when a 3 came on the river. Shortly thereafter Allen Kessler was all-in with A10; Paul called with A8. The board was 67354 giving Paul a straight and leaving Allen in 6th place. Allen, who was at his 2nd final table of the 2007 FPC, would return home to Las Vegas, NV, with $136,452 for his efforts.
Raj took a good portion of Seth Berger's stack with J's full and then left Seth in 5th place when he turned over pocket A's to Seth's A5. Seth, a resident of Berwyn, PA, could not catch a straight and he had $175,439 to ease the pain. Paul again doubled up, this time through Raj for 930K, just before the blinds went to 40K/80K; he was now number 2 in chips.
Paul went all-in with As5s after a 6s4s2 flop and was immediately called by Fred Goldberg of Hollywood, FL, who had pocket J's. Fred's fate was sealed when a spade came on the turn to leave him in 4th place good for $233,918.
Tony Cavezza, the bagel shop owner from Huntington Station, NY, also had a vocal crowd of supporters who sat in stunned silence when his pocket A's lost to Raj's A8 after a 788 flop. Tony had to settle for 3rd place money of $370,370!
When heads-up play began, Raj had almost a 2 to 1 chip advantage. Paul kept the game going and thought he had a good chance to double up once again when a K35 flop gave him top pair with K2. A K on the turn gave him a set. Each time he came out betting and was called by Raj. After a 7 on the river, Paul was all-in but Raj turned over 46 for a straight and the victory! Paul Matteo was the winner of $643,275 for 2nd place!
