ACROSS THE FINISH LINE
By Mike Paulle

The Sport of Kings tournament ended a successful 10 days, tonight, with it's only multiple winner. With 1,671 entries and $386,600 in total prize pool, the tournament guarantee of $340,000 was easily surpassed. Congratulations to tournament director, Robert Thompson, and his hard-working staff.

There were 154 entrants and 193 rebuys in the $200 Buy-In, Limit Hold'em, for a total prize pool of $69,400. 2 tables were paid, a total of 18 players.

Some of the Notables who played: Tony Ma, Barbara Enright, Rod Peate, Eskimo Clark, Mario Esquerra, Young Phan, David Pham, Phillip Luong, Dan Alspach, Pat Fleming, Andre Maloof, Alfredo Moreno, Bev Kruksol, Allen Cunningham, Van Pham, Freddy Legaspi, Steve Nissman, Jun Sin, David Levi, Hon Le, Amir Vahedi, Gary Lent, Anthony Tran, Alex Papachatzakis, Frank Rite, George Marlowe, Sirous B, Binh Ta, Justin Westmoreland, Zena Mogadam, Tom Lockhart, Steve Naideth, Mike Sales, Danny Morgan, JJ Volpe, General Poy, Henry Araneta, Moshe Honi, Can Hua, Chris Roulier, Charlie Satoot, Binh Ta, Albert Umel, Yours Truly and Reyna 'Queen' Velazquez.

With his big blind a few hands away, Albert Umel tried the J 7 of Spades all-in. Richard Katz had a Q 3 in the big blind. The Queen played, giving Umel 19th.

To set up the Final Table: Amgad Ibrahim and Richard Katz were all-in. Dan Heimiller called them both. Ibrahim had the A K of Spades, Katz and Heimiller had J 10. The flop came with a Q 9. When a King that Amgad didn't need hit the turn, Ibrahim was 10th.

Chips were flying as we lost four players in the first 13 minutes. To start off, Joe Chiracosta didn't want to believe Janet Yo flopped a pair of Queens. Joe went all-in with an A 9 and second pair from the big blind. Yo had the hand she represented with K Q.

Unlike Chiracosta, Tekeste Aregaye didn't have any choices. He could only go all-in with his few chips and an A Q. This was going to be Janet Yo's night, however, as she couldn't miss a board. With K Q again, Janet had to wait all the way to the river for the King that sent Aregaye out in 8th.

Everyone wanted Maurice Dankha out. When Maurice went all-in with his last five chips and a J 9, everyone called. They all rapped to the river when a 5 came. Dan Heimiller, in the small blind, had K 5 and Dankha was history in 7th.

Janet Yo may be the hottest tournament player in the country right now. She raised under the gun with yet another K Q. Richard Katz called all-in from his big blind with pocket 3's. No waiting, a King windows right off the top of the deck. It's such an easy game when you're running good, isn't it?

For some reason, Dan Heimiller seems to have decided to change the way he plays tournament poker. Formally, one of the tighter players, Dan now is one of the loosest. With a substantial chip lead that would have easily taken him into at least third place, Heimiller decided to "gamble." Two hands against Kevin Dykstra were pivotal. In the first, Dan tried to push Kevin off a flopped pair of Aces with a pocket pair of 8's. Kevin wasn't happy about the pounding he was taking, but he called Heimiller down and won a giant pot. Then, Heimiller raised Dykstra again. This time Dan had the best hand with an A 10 to Kevin's 10 8. The flop came with a 9 7. Heimiller went all-in. Dykstra called and caught a Jack on the turn for a straight that gave Heimiller a surprising 5th.

In the key hand for Kathy Liebert, she had pocket Kings and Janet Yo flopped the nut straight with 8 7. Kathy reraised Janet and was reraised in return. When they stopped, Janet Yo had most of Kathy's chips. All-in for 4th with a K J of Hearts, it was Janet Yo who put Kathy out with a 10 3 of Hearts when a 3 came on the turn.

No one wanted to play $5,000/$10,000, so a deal was struck. Janet Yo entered the winner's circle for the second time of the Sport of Kings and took down $22,000 with her $100,500 in chips. Kevin Dykstra got $18,000 for his $60,000 in chips. Clarence Cole hung on for 3rd and $8,580 and his $14,000 in chips.
