"This is wonderful -- and so exciting,"
commented Joyce Barnes shortly
after defeating the last of 147 opponents to capture top honors in the Women's Texas Hold'em Championship competition. Her first-place finish in the 15th event of the 2001 Jack Binion World Poker Open brought Barnes $5,742 in prize money, plus a traditional WPO gold and diamond bracelet to commemorate her victory.
"I really enjoyed the tournament, and I plan to come back next year to defend my title," said the grandmother of 10, who began playing poker eight years ago when casino gambling came to Tunica. A recreational competitor from Cleveland, Mississippi, Barnes and her husband own both a refrigeration business and a farm and garden center.
Barnes secured her victory in a climactic finale when she called from the button with 8s 7s against runner-up Barbara Roberts, who was all in before the flop with 4u 2u. When the final board showed 8-8-4/10-4, Roberts' fours full proved no good and she had to settle for second place and $2,871. A poker dealer at the Grand Casino in Tunica, Roberts has been playing the game for 20 years. "The tournament was a little nerve-wracking, but it's nice to get that far," she said, then added, "Joyce is a wonderful gal. I deal to her all the time."
Finishing in third place and taking home $1,435 was Maxine Dewrell of Biloxi, Mississippi. A retired court stenographer, she has played poker for many years and is, incidentally, the aunt of Horseshoe Cardroom Manager Ken Lambert Jr. "This was a great competition, and I'm happy with third place, especially considering that I had only three pocket pairs the entire time," Dewrell said.
