Skulczyck Smokes 'em

Sunday and the Poker Room here at Foxwoods Resort Casino during the New England Poker Classic was relatively calm. With a $220 7-Card Stud 8 or Better event slated, the players who don t participate in split games found a huge variety of side games in which to enjoy themselves.

As noon approached the number of entries swelled to 225, making the prize pool a cool $47,000 which includes the $2,000 added to first place by Foxwoods.

The event moved much faster than anyone could anticipate, and was consolidated to the final 8 players at just before midnight. As the final table was seated, Thomas Noyes of St. Lucie, FL was the chip leader. Being chip leader was also the position at the final table yesterday when his brother Dr. Will Noyes played in the No-Limit Hold em event.

After play resumed, John Yarmosh of Canadensis, PA was eliminated when he went all-in holding Ace Deuce and finished with an 8 low, only to be scooped by Ricardo Festejo of Atlantic City, NJ with high and 7 low.

Only several hands later, Cape Cod Massachusetts resident Alan Ace Miller would join the rail birds when his small pair got no help and fell to the Ace s up held by Mike Skulczyck of nearby Uncasville, CT. Noyes then got in several hands which left him short stacked and wound up making his final stand after he pushed his last $5,500 in on a four way pot after pairing his door card. Unfortunately, the pair of 5's would be it and Eddie Fishman of New York, NY took down the pot with a pair of Queens.

Foxwoods regular Kenny Chanthamala collected fifth place after he aggressively played several hands and went all-in for $19,000. Fishman would show 7's up to win the pot, thinning the field to four players.

Now with Skulczyck and Fishman almost even and the remaining 2 players short stacked, play tightened up some. Skulczyck then made several aggressive moves, and eventually was looking at felt, all-in for his last few chips, only to make a full-house and then come back strong.

At 1 a.m., Tournament Director Michael Ward gave the players a 10 minute break, allowing for coloring up and a quick chip race before raising the limits to $10,000-20,000. It took only one hand to determine that Andrew Latto of Foxboro, MA would be collecting fourth place after he took Queens up all-in but showed down against Aces up belonging to Skulczyck.

The third place prize was soon presented to Festejo when he missed his force bet straight draw. Skulczyck again took the spoils with a pair of 7's and a low for good measure.

Now with Fishman staked for about one quarter of that in Skulczyck s piles, the end would come swiftly. Fishman played the cards dealt him but with rebuys not an option, Skulczyck took the final pot of the night with an Ace high as he watched Fishman muck his hand and stand to offer his congratulations.
