Romano Rolls to Victory
By Steven E. Way
The $120 Limit Texas Hold 'em event brought a record turn out of 370 entries on Monday here at Foxwoods. The event was started with craftsman like precision right at noon by Tournament Director Muck Ward and his dedicated staff.
After starting with 42 tables, it would only take 9 hours to pare the field of participants down to the final 9 and seat them at a final table. After taking a short break, the run for the Waterford crystal trophy was on. Thomas Schreiber of nearby Griswold Connecticut was chip leader sitting with stacks of almost $50,000.
The short stack, Betty Robinson of Coventry, RI would make a valiant effort, but soon would be eliminated playing her big blind for $1,500 and going all-in with an additional $500 after the flop. Robinson would need a 3 for a straight, but it did not come. Instead, Ken Olivo of Johnston, RI would hold enough with Ace King to take the pot.
Eighth place would soon be collected by Sam Blum hailing from Tampa, FL. Blum with Ace 10, paired the 10 on the flop for high pair, but Mike Santora of Worcester, MA would squeeze his King 7 off suit and make a diamond flush on the river.
Santora would be the next to fall, with a missed draw. Santora mucked his hand after Olivo showed King Queen.
A few short hands later, Tim Clingen of Santa Barbara, CA would exit after getting involved in a double side pot hand with Olivo and Kim Eisler of Washington, DC. Clingen mucked Jack 10 for sixth place, leaving the side pots to Olivo with his pair of 5's. Eisler made a straight with Ace 10 to stay alive and stack up the main pot.
Fifth place would soon be collected by Schreiber who flopped a pair of Queens but got his feet wet on the river when an Ace fell to pair up Eisler.
Now a protracted battle to stay alive would commence. Four players remained, and no one wanted fourth place.
Soon Eisler would wind up going all-in with king Jack after seeing the flop come Ace Queen Jack. Olivo called with pocket Kings and scooped the chips when no 10 fell.
Third place would eventually belong to Nicholas Stefos of Worcester, MA who survived seemingly endless trips to the felt but eventually succumbed holding King 10 while Ernest Romano of Queens, NY holding King Queen out-kicked him with only a pair of 7's on the board.
Now at heads up, the end would come swiftly. Blinds were $2,000-4,000 as the clock passed one a.m. and each player held nearly even stacks. The final hand was one of fate as Olivo pushed all-in with pocket Jacks. Romano called holding Ace 9 and the men watched as the flop came Ace, 3, 9. the turn and river brought rags, and Olivo rose to shake hands with the latest champion Ernest Romano.
