Tournament Report
|
The price tag may have been small ($335) but that didn't stop an impressive field including Barbara Enright, Kenna James, and Men Nguyen, from making their way to the Bicycle Casino for the very first event of the 2007 Legends of Poker.
Speaking of big names, Kenna James had to be the hottest commodity in the field. At one time, Kenna was down to as little as 400 in chips. He roared back with repeated double-up's and picking the right time to make his moves. He was as much an artist as he was a soldier in these trenches.
Men "The Master" Nguyen played steady, calculating poker and amassed his stack over time. He took a few small hits to his stack, but it was usually very small. He seemed to be in great spirits going into the last hour of play on the first day as he began ordering his signature Corona's. He would not fare as well as Kenna.
The bubble was busted on day 2 approximately 1 hour into the game when on a flop of 8s - 2s - 8c Men Nguyen made a smallish bet and got the call from Arash Beral and one other player. On the Turn of Ks, it was checked down. The river brought out a Jc and Men Nguyen made it 4,500 to go. The first opponent folded and Arash Beral pushed in his remaining chips. Men insta-called and showed the flopped full house, 2's full of 8's while Aresh held the nut flush with the As - 10s and became our bubble boy. The remaining 90 players were in the money.
A little over 7 hours after we started the tournament, we made it down to the final 10 players. The first man to exit the final table did so on hand #3. Patrick Minoofar moved all-in with his remaining 32k and got called by Harvey Scholl. Scholl held 8-9 while Patrick had the A-6. The flop was 7-K-6, giving Patrick the pair of 6's and Harvey the straight draw. The turn was a 9 and Scholl had the upper hand. The river was a J and that was it for Patrick Minoofar who finished 10th earning $3,185.
Kenna James had been dwindling down in chips until finally he made a move. Alan Daniels and Jerry Gerstel both called his small all-in and checked the board down to the river. With the board reading K-5-Q-3-6 Jerry made a bet and Alan folded so it was Jerry and Kenna showing their cards. Kenna flopped a set of Q's and Jerry made a lo-ball straight with his 2-4. Kenna James finished 9th earning $3,720.
Kevin Kung got clobbered by Tommy Le when Le's Q-9 flopped a set of 9's and rivered quad's! Kevin Kung finished 8th earning $4,250.
Arin Youssefian had his hands full against Tommy Le when his A-10 was high carded by the A-Q of Le. The board read J-7-4-9-K and that was it for Arin Youssefian who finished 7th earning $4,785.
Alan Daniels has been playing about as good as anyone could up to this point. He had gotten shortstacked and decided to make a move in the cut-off with an A-2 and got the call from Tommy Le who had the Q-J. The flop was promising to both players when it came A-10-9. the turn was the Q and the river ended Alan's day when the J popped out giving Tommy 2 pair. Alan Daniels finished 6th earning $5,315.
Even though Harvey Scholl was holding nearly half the chips in play, he was still able to be beat. Scholl made it 40k to go UTG and Steven shkolnik moved all-in for another 80k on top bringing the total to 120k and Scholl called. Steven had K-Q and Harvey had A-4. The flop was good to Harvey when it dropped A-K-6, but it gave some outs to Steven. The turn was a useless 5, but the river was a Q and Steven doubled up.
On the next hand, jerry Gerstel put his small stack in the middle and got the insta-call from Harvey Scholl who had pocket 10's. Jerry was trying to steal the blinds with his 4-5. The board read 8-9-5-Q-7 and Jerry Gerstel finished 5th earning $7,970.
The remaining 4 players decided on a chop and our champion is Harvey Scholl who earned $74,388.
