MICHAEL VELA ROLLS TO VICTORY! FINAL STANDINGS WINS $1,704,986!!!

The 2007 Foxwoods World Poker Finals $10000 No-Limit Championship became a showdown between the defending 2006 Champion, Nenad Medic, the 2005 Champion, Nick Schulman, and the 13th place finisher in 2006, Michael Vela of Newburgh, NY.
When it was over, the mutual fund industry representative and relative poker amateur, Michael Vela, was the owner of the 2007 Championship trophy, commemorative leather jacket, a $25,000 seat in the WPT Championship and $1,704,986!!!
The Final Table got underway just after 5 pm and it was not long before Mark Weitzman of Las Vegas, NV, was all-in with As3h. Nenad had earlier doubled up through Tom Dwan when he paired a K on the river to beat Tom's pocket Q's. Nenad called Mark with Ah5h and a river flush left Mark with 6th place money of $189,142. Nenad doubled up again with a set of 10's through Mike White who was left shortstacked. Mike had a vocal cheering section which went silent when he lost his last chips to Mike Vela's 10's. Mike would take 5th place and $243,184 home to Ellington, CT.
Of the four players left, the Edison, NJ, resident and internet player, Tom Dwan, was the short stack with Mike Vela leading the way. Tom had entered the table as the chip leader but had seen his advantage slowly erode away. He had AK and hoped to survive when his all-in was called by Mike with KJ. But a J on the river gave the pot to Mike and Tom was the 4th place winner of $324,244.
Nenad Medic of Niagara Falls, Ontario, was trying to become the first player to defend a WPT Championship and/or to win the same event twice. His effort fell short of the goal as he succumbed to the tidal wave that was Mike Vela. Nedic had straight possibilities with A7 but Mike had AJ and two J's on the board gave Mike trips and Nedic had 3rd place and $486,367!!
By the time there were two players left, Mike Vela had a chip advantage of more than three to one over Nick Schulman of New York City, NY. Nick was also trying to become the first player to win a WPT Championship for the second time and he fared no better than Nenad. Shortly into heads-up action, Nick was in with pocket 5's. Mike had AQ and with AQ on the flop and with no 5's to be seen, Nick was in 2nd place with $864,652!!!
And Michael Vela was the winner of the 2007 Foxwoods World Poker Finals $10,000 Championship worth $1,704,986!!! Reported by Jeffrey A Toth for Foxwoods Resort Casino
