Tournament Report

A Tale of Two Phillies

Six days ago, 665 hopefuls appeared at the Commerce Casino to vie for the title of World Poker Tour LA Poker Classic Champion. Phil Ivey was one of the more familiar faces in the huge crowd. Depsite the fact that he owns five WSOP bracelets, Phil had yet to claim a WPT title, despite seven final table appearances.

Phil Ivey started the day as chip leader with a cushion of $1.5 million over his closest competitor, but he had to face some tough competition. Nam Le, who already held a WPT title, was the short stack and Phil Hellmuth, widely recognized as one of the best Hold'em tournament players in the world, was in third.

'Hellmuth is my good luck charm" said Ivey. According to him, when both Phils compete at the same final table, Phil Ivey takes it down. "But I was glad he busted out early" Ivey said. Hellmuth was the first to depart in 6th place when he got all in on the turn with a single pair, only to face Nam Le's two pair. Nam Le also dispatched Scott Montgomery in 5th place.

It looked like Nam Le was going to make a run for his second WPT title when he got all in with pocket Aces and called by Phil Ivey, who just held pocket 3s, but Phil caught a trey on the turn to bust Nam in 4th place. There was no stopping the Ivey buzz-saw after that. On the next hand, he send Charles "Woody" Moore packing when his top two pair held up against Woody's pair with open-ended straight draw. Charles "Woody" Moore finished in 3rd place.

Heads-up play began with Phil Ivey holding a better than 4-to-1 chip lead over Quinn Do. It only took two hands and Quinn was put to the test when Phil moved all-in on a board showing A 8 6A. After agonizing for several minutes, Quinn made the call showing 9 8 for two pair. Phil held A 8 for the full house and had Quinn drawing dead.

Phil Ivey now owns his first WPT title, but undoubtedly not his last.
