Tournament Report
| The final table of the Bay 101 Shooting Star Championship had only one Shooting
Star in residence. Jennifer Harman was the last bounty remaining. She was also
the last female in the tournament and was facing four tough pros and an amateur
with a big stack.
John 'the Razor' Phan was the short stack coming to the table. He made a valiant
effort, but finally had to put his last chips in with Q8 suited, only to run into
the pocket 6s of Noah Jefferson. John finished 6th.
Mike Baker was the only amateur at this final table and he arrived with lots of
chips, but apparently the pressure of facing down 5 pros was too much for him.
He called off all his chips with nothing but a flush draw against monster chip
leader Brandon Cantu, who had the monster hand pocket Aces. Mike couldn't catch
one of his outs and was ousted in 5th place.
The final four players battled for more than four hours while each tried to get
a leg up on the chip leader. Noah Jefferson ended up getting his chips in with
AK against Steve Sung's pocket 7s. Noah couldn't win the race and was sent to
the rail in 4th place. Jennifer Harman went out the same way: all-in with AK against
Brandon's pocket 9s. Jennifer also couldn't win a race and left in 3rd place.
Brandon Cantu collected his 6th bounty of the tournament for busting her.
Heads-up play started with Brandon having a more than 4-to-1 chip lead on Steve
Sung and only took 16 hands. In the end, Steve got his chips in with pocket 3s,
only to find he was badly beaten by Brandon's pocket 4s. No miracle for Steve
and he finished in 2nd place. Brandon Cantu is the Shooting Star champion and
now he has a WPT title to go with his WSOP bracelet. |
