Tournament Report

Khiem Nguyen Takes Another 1st Place in the Final Limit Hold'em Event Along with Best All-Around Player

The Peppermill wrapped up it’s Spring Poker Tournament with a $120 Hold’em event. The event drew 82 players with 78 rebuys and created a prize pool of $15,840. The tournament staff consisted of the best in the business thanks to Charlie Bates, cardroom manager, and Peppermill’s own, Billy V who brought in Tournament Coordinator Steve Morrow, along with a very proficient tournament staff.

The final table of the last event was determined at 7:40 with $300-$600 blinds and at the $600-$1,200 limit. The final table began with a full 30 minute level.

Thirty minutes of play passed without one casualty and at 8:15 the limit increased to $1,000-$2,000 with $500-$1,000 blinds.

Twenty minutes later Jan Siroky raised and Khiem Nguyen called. The flop came A-7-5, Jan checked, Khiem bet, Jan raised, Khiem raised and Jan called all-in with his last $200. Jan showed Q-10 and Khiem turned over A-6 for a pair of aces. The turn card was jack and the river was another seven. Jan was the first casualty and had to settle for 9th place with $475.

At 8:45 the limits rose to $1,500-$3,000 with blinds at $700-$1,500.

On the second hand at the new limit Pat Castelluccio raised and Khiem called. The flop came Q-Q-2, Pat bet and Khiem called. The turn was a three, Pat bet, KhiemNino bet and Khiem called. The turn card was a four, Nino bet all-in for $2,300 and Khiem called. Nino showed A-6 of spades and Khiem rolled over J-7 offsuit for trip sevens. The river was a six and for the third time at final table play Nino was sent home holding A-6. Nino took 6th place and $871.

At 9:15 the $100 chips were raced off and the limit increased to $2,000-$4,000 with blinds at $1,000-$2,000.

They were five handed with Khiem exceedingly ahead with $70,000, Tony was in second with $21,000, Jim was in third with $12,000, Paul W. was in fourth with $11,000 and Paul L. was barely hanging on with $5,000.

On the seventh hand at the new limit Khiem raised, Paul W. reraised, Khiem raised again and Paul W. called all-in. Khiem turned over A-Q of hearts and Paul showed pocket queens. The flop came Jh-2d-8h and Paul was in the lead with a pair of queens but Khiem had a nut flush draw. The turn card was a four of clubs. The river was the king of hearts and Khiem made his flush. Paul W. took 5th place and $1,125.

On the 70th hand of final table play Paul L. raised all-in for $4,000 and Tony called. Paul L. showed K-J and Tony turned over 10-6. The flop came 4-6-Q and Tony was ahead with a pair of sixes. The turn card was a deuce and the river was a seven. Paul L. was eliminated in 4th place and took home $1,505.

Eight hands later Jim won a big pot from Tony and Jim took over second place with $33,000 to Paul’s $10,000 and Khiem had all the rest.

At 9:50 the limit increased to $3,000-$6,000 with blinds at $1,500-$3,000.

On the first hand of the new limit Tony raised, Khiem reraised and Tony called. The flop came 4d-7d-3c, Khiem checked and Tony checked. The turn card came the four of clubs, Khiem bet and Tony raised all-in for $8000 and Khiem called. Khiem turned over the K-Q of clubs showing a flush draw. Tony showed the A-J of diamonds and was in the lead and also drawing to a flush. It was definitely Khiem's day, or should I say week, the river card came the ace of clubs and Khiem came out of his chair with joy. Tony missed his flush but took home $2,059 for his 3rd place finish. It was heads-up between Jim and Khiem, who had already won two events, placed 2nd in one and was already declared the Best All-Around player at the Peppermill Spring Tournament in Reno.

Khiem had dominated the final table and had a very impressive chip lead with $90,000 to Jim’s $21,000.

On the fifth hand of heads-up play Khiem made Jim an offer he couldn’t refuse and the tournament ended. Khiem was proclaimed the winner and Jim took 2nd place along with $3,152 to add to his bankroll.

Khiem took home $5,386 and another trophy. That was Khiem’s fourth trophy from the Peppermill. Khiem also received $2,091 for his Best All-Around award.

Khiem proved to be the Best All-Around player by winning over $30,000. He finished 1st in the $120 Limit Hold’em for $10,454, 2nd in the $225 No-Limit for $5,653, 1st in the $225 Limit Hold’em for $6,665, 1st in the last $120 Limit Hold’em for $5,386 and received $2,091 for the Best All-Around player.
