King Reigns Supreme
By Steven E. Way
Another record crowd gathered yesterday morning at 11:00 for the first Holdem event of the 2001 New England Poker Classic here at Foxwoods Resort Casino. As the crowd of 493 players gathered, many wondered how it was that for the first time in Foxwoods tournament history, a Holdem event drew more players than the same size 7-Card Stud event.
As the action got under way, each player was hoping to survive at least until the final table of ten, and thus insure a significant return on their investment. Each player also knew that they only needed a few good breaks early to take them all the way to the victory.
The final table gathered right about 8:00 last evening, and saw a steady play of quality hands, ultimately leading to the championship. The first of the ten to be eliminated was Steve Crunch Daniel of Belmont, Massachusetts when he pushed his last few chips into action with a pocket pair of 9s. After the flop came carrying a pair of Queens, Jeffrey King of nearby Colchester, Connecticut showed Crunch his Ace, Queen.
Ninth place would be claimed by Foxwoods tournament regular Spiro Mitrokostas of West Yarmouth, Massachusetts. Mitrokostas, who seems to find more than his fair share of final tables, took his short stack all-in with Queen, 9 suited. His only caller, Pete Fox Seymour of Westerly, Rhode Island held pocket Queens and watched the board give Spiro a straight draw right up until the river came with a blank.
The next player to become a spectator was Kenneth Auliffe of Orillia, Ontario, Canada when he pushed all-in with pocket 9s and got no help against Seymours Queens.
Daniel Brodsky of Bayside, New York was eliminated when he ran head on into a full house being played by Southone Phouthasy of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, and claimed the seventh place prize.
Sixth place was then collected when it was again Seymour who played a pair of 9s, made 9s up and held on against Jeff King with a busted flush draw.
Next Richard Ohmann of Hawley, Massachusetts would wind up on the rail after going all-in with Ace, King. With a Jack and a pair of 5s on the board, the Ace, Jack in the hands of Thomas King of Hull, Massachusetts would claim the pot.
After several uneventful rounds, David Scherer of West Hartford, Connecticut would play his last $4,000 in chips holding 9, 7 of clubs. Phouthasy who made the easy call with King, Queen had just enough to win as the board shot all blanks at both players.
Phouthasy then managed to survive some steep stack swings, but eventually went all-in with 8, 6 suited. Tom King was barely ahead before the flop with 10, 9 but managed to make 10s on the flop while Phouthasy only caught another 6 on the river.
The heads up duel between King and Seymour lasted nearly 40 minutes, but eventually ended when Seymour played his last chips with Ace, 5 and with no help lost the pot and the contest to Kings pair of 7s.
