Tournament Report

Marcel Sabag Goes From Worst to First

The 2008 Winnin' o' the Green series played out with event #9 No Limit Hold'em where 210 players battled for a first pool of $61,110. The tournament progressed at a typical speed until the final ten players were set at the final table around midnight. No one wanted to be out 10th but it didn't appear that anyone was gambling to take 1st either.

On hand #6, Marcel Sabag picked up pocket 10s and was covered by the chip leader Ali Chahine who had A-K. The board was J-J-Q-3-5 and Marcel Sabag doubled up and started a run from last place in chips to winning the whole event.

I told the players I wouldn't be writing about this hand but since there were only 4 hands that eliminated 5 players and they did a 6-way chop, I have some real estate to fill on this report. Hand #31 played out when Larry Vance raised from the button and was called by the big blind Steven Tada. Neither player was all-in and it got checked to the river with a board of 7-6-2-5-Q. Larry showed K-9 and Steven showed A-4. Both players realized they could have had the pot uncontested in either had thrown a chip in the pot before the showdown. That's just how tight/conservative this final table is in the early going.

The first elimination occurred 90 minutes into the final table when chip leader Ali Chahine had Larry Vance covered in a 3-way pot that got checked down until the river and Ali bet 20,000. Marcel Sabag folded and Ali showed pocket Jacks into a board of J-8-5-9-6 for trip Jacks and Larry showed Kd-6d for one pair. Larry Vance finished in 10th place and earned $765.

The next big confrontation occurred on the very next hand (#33) when it was folded to the blinds and they opted to battle. Kevin Thong, in the small blind, raised all-in in an attempt to extort the big blind to give up his blind and antes. Marcel Sabag looked at his cards and said 'CALL!' Marcel showed his pocket Kings and Kevin had to show his 7-4. The board came Q-7-3-A-10 and Marcel's Kings took down the pot. Kevin, who finished 10th in a previous event, was relieved he wasn't the first one out in tonight's final table. Kevin Thong finished in 9th place and won $915.

The final hand resulted in a double elimination when the following 3-way pot developed: Albertin Hernandez, in his second final table at the 2008 WOG, raised all-in from the cutoff and was called by both blinds. Marcel Sabag in the small blind had 10-10, Liet Huynh had A-K in the big blind and Albertin showed 8-8. The flop was J-10-7 and Marcel's set of tens was in the clear lead. Liet was looking for a Queen to make his straight but the turn 6 and river deuce eliminated two players. Albertin had more chips at the beginning of the hand than Liet and consequently took 7th place for $1,525. Liet Huynh finished in 8th place and took home $1,220.

The remaining 6 players elected to evaluate a chip count and agreed to it without too much negotiation. Marcel Sabag had the chip lead and was declared the winner of event #9. What started off as the slowest final table in No Limit Hold'em history, ended at 2:15 am, about 2 hours after it began.
