Peter Plays (8 or) Better
Steven E. Way

April Fools Day is still having some residual effects here at the 2001 New England Poker Classic. The start of the $220 7-Card Stud Hi-Lo, 8 or Better was right on time, but the event managed to fool everyone by setting a record pace to the final table.

Starting out with 178 players, the field seemed destined for slow play. The nature of the game, and the caliber of the field was taken as an omen. After taking an early dinner break, the final table was assembled at 6:00 in the evening. The final eight would play together for nearly an hour, a total change of pace.

Finally, the eight place spot had a name to go with it when Marc Gutterman of Bronx, New York was eliminated by the fours full played by the eventual champion Peter Dimatteo of Warwick, Rhode Island.

Seventh place would then be won by Thomas Donahue of North Clarendon, Vermont. Donahue was the short stack when he got to the final table, and he went all-in with a starting pair of fives. Joseph Immordino of Trenton, New Jersey won the high side with two pairs, while Wayne Labillois of Dorchester, Massachusetts and Dimatteo split the low side.

Immordino would wind up as the next player to step up to the payout window when Dimatteo made nines over eights to beat his pocket Aces, neither player having a low.

Labillois hung on to take fifth place, eventually being knocked out playing a pair of Queens against two small pairs and a 7 low belonging to Luigi Grilla who hails from sunny Miami, Florida.

Fourth place would belong to Anthony Tucciarone of Coventry, Rhode Island who played his last chips with an Ace high and a seven five low. Dimatteo would again showdown with the better hand, a six high straight for a scooper.

Soon Alan Pearlman of nearby Norwich, Connecticut would be eliminated. Caught short stacked Pearlman pushed all-in and made a pair of sixes, but the board missed giving up a low. Grilla would catch a second Ace on the river to go with his other pair of fours.

The heads up play between Grilla and Dimatteo would take the event to nearly 11:00 last evening. Each man taking turns going all-in and surviving, often splitting the pots. Finally Grilla took his last few chips on a ride with an Ace and a low draw. Dimatteo managed to make eights up with no low coming on board for the win.

A hearty Congratulations to Peter on a Splendid Win!
