Tournament Report
Ketul Nathwani wins third leg of GUKPT
23-year old Ketul Nathwani has won the third leg of the 2008 Grosvenot UK Poker Tour after a quick fire conclusion to the four-day £1,000 tournament, held at the Grosvenor Victoria casino in London. He fought his way past a field of 424 players to take down the first prize of £119,780 plus a seat in November's £3,000 grand final. The young Internet pro was on of 14 players who returned for the final day of the tournament, with a slightly above average chip stack, but he soon assumed the chip lead by playing an aggressive and fearless style of poker. By the time the 9-handed final table was reached, he had stretched his lead further, controlling almost a quarter of the chips in play.
The final got off to a slow start with no casualties during the first hour of play, but after the dinner break all hell broke loose, as player after player fell by the wayside, while Ketul's stack rose higher and higher. The runner up was 20-year old Tony Phillips, who had also played a fearless game throughout, so it was no surprise that all his chips went into the middle on the first hand of heads up play. Ketul held a 9:1 chip lead and called with pocket fives. Tony's hand was A-2, but it did not improve, enabling the Indian born Londoner to claim his first major live tournament victory. Although he regards himself mainly as an online cash game player, this victory has spurred him on to try and achieve even greater live performances. During the post tournament interview he commented that he hopes to take down a couple of WSOP bracelets this summer.
Dan Samson in 3rd, David Rudling in 4th and Maria Demetriou in 5th place all fell when making ill fated stands against Nathwani. Steve Jelinek in 6th place was another victim of the eventual winner while Tony Phillips claimed the scalps of 7th and 8th place finishers Fran Egan and Lloyd Rees. Colin Kennedy, the most experienced player to make the final, was the first player to be eliminated when his K-T was not good enough for Rudling's A-5
Ketul also wins himself a seat in the £3,000 GUKPT Grand Final plus a seat in the £75,000 GUKPT Champion of Champions Tournament. |
