Tournament Report
Chad Viall Plays to the End - Wins at Sunrise
The 2008 Legends of Poker brought 535 players together in two day 1 flights on Saturday. The final 150+ players returned on Sunday to play for a prize pool of $366,369. With almost 3.8 million chips in play (includes 724 rebuys) and a first prize of $106,249, the room is filled with players looking to accumulate lots of chips.
The final table was set at 3:30am with a couple of short stacks and a micro-stack. Play was extremely fast right out of the gate.
On hand #2 Chad Viall had Duoc Nguyen covered preflop and all-in. Chad's As-3s and Duoc's K-10 saw a board of A-7-5-10-5. Chad Viall scores Aces-up for a better two pair and Duoc Nguyen finishes in 10th place and earned $4,030.
Just two hands later, Johnny Johnson pushed his remaining 40K in preflop and was called by the small blind. Benjamin Nguyen held A-8 and Johnny was a slight dog with K-J. The board came 8-6-3-X-A and Benjamin N. led the entire way. Johnny Johnson finished in 9th place and added $7,325. Johnny, entering the final table with only three big blinds waited out 4 hands before making his move and earned an additional $3,300 over the 10th place payout.
On hand #8 Jonathan Rosenthal pushed his last 115,000 in preflop with an A-9 and was called by Chad Viall holding a dominated A-8. The board landed J-6-5-6-8 and the river 8 allowed Chad to overcome the domination and sent Jonathan Rosenthal out in 8th place for a 2-day pay check of $10,990.
Six hands later found Sarkis Telikyan, short stacked after taking a beat a couple of hands before, all-in with a Js-10 from the big blind. Benjamin Tang called with a K-3 and the board followed 2s-5-6s-4s-2. Benjamin hit the straight on the turn while Sarkis could not quite make his spade draw on the river. Sarkis Telikyan finished in 7th place and collected $14,655.
With four players out in the first 14 hands, play started to slow with some discussion of chip count deals but nothing close to agreement. About an hour later Michael Hirschensohn was all-in with an A-J in the cutoff and was called by Benjamin Tang on the button with 8-8. The board fell Q-4-2-10-9 and Benjamin's pocket pair held up while Michael finishes in 6th place for $18,315 in prize money.
On hand #52 the duel of the Benjamin's took place. Benjamin Tang held a K-Q and had Benjamin Nguyen covered and dominated with a Kh-Jh. The board ran out 10-9-8-K-5 and Tang's kicker bests Nguyen's hand. Benjamin Nguyen finished in 5th place and earned a respectable $21,985.
About one orbit later, Vasile Buboi was all-in with A-K post flop against Arlen Karapetian's 10-3 on a board of 3-3-6-A-K. Arlen's set couldn't be beat even though Vasile hit top two. Vasile Buboi was eliminated in 4th place and earned $25,645.
With the clock nearing 7am, Arlen Karapetian called Benjamin Tang's all-in preflop. Arlen had the lead with A-Q against Benjamin's K-2. The board was 9-8-2-8-6 and Benjamin pairs his deuce for a knockout. Arlen Karapetian collected $29,310 for his 3rd place finish.
Heads up play started with Chad holding roughly 2:1 chip lead against Benjamin Tang. Both players cordially agreed that they would play it to the end. The end was just 3 hands into the heads up match. On hand #74 Chad raised 200,000 preflop and on the button. Benjamin called and the flop came Ah-A-2h. In a fury, all the chips went in and Chad showed pocket 3s and Benjamin showed 8h-5h. Benjamin desperately needed to hit a heart on the river (another deuce would create a chop). The 6c found its way to the river and Chad Viall took down a Legends of Poker title and $106,249. Benjamin Tang secured 2nd place and received $56,055.
