Tournament Report
Lawrence Fujii Takes Down the Stud 8 Event on 8/8/8
The 2008 Legends of Poker continued with Event #11, a $335 buy-in 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo 8 or better tournament. A field of 162 vied for a share of the $47,142 prize pool. Action started with 29:27 left at Level 14 with antes of 500, low card bring in of 1500 with limits of 4000-8000.
It was fitting they played 7 Card Stud 8 on the unique date of 8/8/8. The tournament staff warned me this final table would be very interesting. Was expecting the usual grumpy Stud 8 players who whine about everything. It was quite the contrary as by interesting they meant entertaining.
Lawrence Fujii arrived as the commanding chip leader. While the atmosphere was light and full of laughter the play was still solid. Jamil Hodaly got his last chips in on 6th street with a board of 7-A-J-A against Richard Alm’s Q-Q-8-9 board. Hodaly ended up with Aces up but Alm’s down cards of J-10-8 gave him a Queen high straight knocking the actor from Sherman Oaks, CA out in 8th place for $940.
Alm kept his rush going against Otto Cipolla who got his last chips in on 5th street with a J-4-3 board. Alm had 4-5-2 showing. On 6th street Cipolla caught a 3 and Alm caught the last 3 in the deck and when he showed a 6 as one of his down cards his 6 high straight and 6 low gave him the whole pot and sending Cipolla out in 7th place for $1,415.
It was a little bit past last call and since the players couldn’t order any more drinks they decided to call it a night. A chip count deal was discussed and agreed upon with Lawrence Fujii declared the winner of event #11.

BIOGRAPHY
Lawrence Fujii is a retiree from Honolulu, Hawaii. He said he never thought he had a chance of winning this tournament. At one point in the tournament he was down to a very short stack of 1900. He then doubled up twice in a row and went on an incredible rush to arrive to the final table as a commanding chip leader. Lawrence flew in just for the Legends of Poker series. You can see him playing in 20-40 and 40-80 limit hold’em cash games at the Bike.
