Tournament Report

One Chip Separates Gold from Silver for Joseph Dappa

Event #9 of Big Poker October was the very popular $100+$20 Deep Stack No Limit event. A field of 434 players made up a prize pool of $42,098. The final table was set about 5:30am with a couple of severely short stacked players. The blinds were in level 18 with antes of 4,000 and blinds of 10,000/20,000.

It didn't take long for the first elimination and it did not include the 2 short stacks. On hand #4 Akop Grishikyan and Paul Liu raised each other until Paul was all-in. Akop held pocket jacks and Paul showed suited big slick (Ac-Kc). The flop gave Paul Liu the lead with K-10-2. The turn 4 increased his lead and it looked like he was going to stay alive but the river Jack was Akop's 'two outer' and Paul was disappointed and eliminated in 10th place earning $505.

On hand #7 under-the-gun Joseph Dappa managed to call the all-in and call with a 4c-5c. Eddie Villareal held A-J and super short stack Samocum Samrith had pocket Kings. The flop was Kc-Jc-10c and Joseph took a commanding lead with the flopped flush over Samocum's top set. The turn was the 2c and the river 9c. All three players had a flush but Joseph's 5c gave him the highest flush. Eddie had more chips than Samocum and consequently finished in 8th place for $1,265. Somocum finished in 9th for $840.

Joseph dragged a sizable pot and took the chip lead by one $5000 chip.
This one chip was of significant importance since a chip count deal was evaluated and accepted. Joseph Dappa was declared the winner over Akop Grishikyan by that single chip advantage. The tournament concluded at 6am and the typical phrase of 'I have to be at work in X hours!' was heard several times while the prize pool was distributed to the final seven players.

It should be noted that two of the final table players are tournament rookies and both played solid poker to make the final table. The champion Joseph Dappa has been playing tournaments for only 2 ½ weeks and Dave 'Porky' Porcellino was playing in his first tournament at the urging of his wife who gave up on sweating him at about 3am. Congrats to the rookies and good luck with the 'tournament bug' that will compel you to play more tournaments in the immediate future.

BIOGRAPHY

Joseph Dappa is in the construction trade and has only been playing tournaments for 2 ½ weeks. He typically plays cash games and you can find him in the $100 No Limit games. Joseph learned to play by grinding it out at The Bike and had finally decided to try tournaments. He found himself very short stacked after the 2nd break but then caught a couple of hands and landed at the final table with the chip lead.

Joseph knocked out the final two players at the final table on the last hand prior to the chip count deal. He took the title by having one more chip (5,000) than the 2nd place finisher. Joseph considers his tournament play to be tight and that worked very well for him against 433 other players.
