Tournament Report
1329 anted up $300 to enter the 2008 Foxwoods World Poker Finals No-Limit Hold'em Shoot-out. Single
table shoot-outs were held at 10 am and 1 pm and the top three players on each table advanced to the 4 pm Finals. A
total of 399 winners returned at 4 pm to pursue the prize pool of $335,173! When play ended on Monday there were
36 players remaining; they resumed play at Noon on Tuesday and by 4 pm the Final Table was underway. It took
almost three hours for Gaetano Cannata of Feeding Hills, MA, to claim the title. Gaetano had an amazing up and
down battle with runner-up Jia Liu, but finally prevailed to capture the Championship Trophy, commemorative
leather jacket and $82,956!
The first player to leave the final table was Daniel Campbell. Dan moved all-in with AQ but when Jia
turned over K10 and hit the K on the flop, Dan was left in 10th place. The Marlborough, MA, resident had $3,416
for his efforts. Cheshire, CT, native Louis Pito pushed in his last 80K with AJ. Gaetano called with Q10 and after
hitting the 10 on the flop, Louis would claim 9th place for $4,190. Mike Gambale of Hanover, MA, would be the
8th place finisher. He pushed all in with a strong 106K with A10 only to be called by Gaetano and AK. The 10 was
flopped but the K was turned and Mike realized 8th place and $5,865. Neal Gersony had 95 against Richard
Grant's AJ, but neither one hit the board and Neal took down $8,380 for 7th place.
Gaetano went for the kill with his commanding chip lead next taking down Richard Grant of Waltham,
MA. Richard was all-in with AK, and after a 10JJ flop and Gaetano's J10 left Richard in 6th with a $11,731 payday.
Paul Duchemin pushed all-in with KJ after the flop of J3c10c and was called by Gaetano's 6c4c, and with the 2c on
the river, Paul finished 5th with a prize of $13,407. Robel Teklu of Boston, MA, went all-in with KJ only to be
called by chip leader Gaetano and KQ. After the Q hit on the river, Gaetano picked up another 344,000 in chips and
an overwhelming chip lead, while Robel took 4th and $20,110. Gaetano also had the pleasure of taking down the
3rd place finisher, Edward O'Brien, who pushed all-in with K8. Gaetano called with AJ, and with no help for
Edward he parted with $26,814 and an impressive 3rd.
At the start of head's up action, Gaetano Cannata had nearly a 6 to 1 chip advantage. But his edge was
reversed following a series of hands which included two called all-in efforts by Jia Liu. Jia's 1st all-in was for
145K with A4. Gaetano called with J6 and got no help. Jia's 2nd all-in push was with A6 for just over 400K, again
Gaetano called, this time with A8 only to see 66K on the flop and a near reversal of chip fortune. Jia eventually
realized the chip lead only to be called after pushing all in on a flush draw with 8h2h by Gaetano's draw of 9h6h
which neither hit but the 9 played, and 770K was pushed to Gaetano. Several hands later Jia moved all-in with A9
and was called with KsQs. Flop was AsKh6s, turn 7c, river 4s and the flush and the Championship for Gaetano!
