Tournament Report

Event #3: Omaha 8 or Better

Report by Debbie Burkhead

Bo Howard from Phoenix and Gene Bowden from Yuma Go head-to-head

Before I get into the results of the final table of the Omaha 8 or better tournament, I'd like to remind everyone to please use their Club Fantasy Players Club Card while gambling throughout the casino. This really will help Bonnie Domiano prove to management that we are valuable customers.

Bonnie and her expert tournament staff have done an outstanding job and have gone out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. Bonnie has been more than generous in providing a continental breakfast every morning, giving a complimentary buffet ticket to all tournament players and providing a wonderful dinner to all players left at the dinner break. She has also given out special T-shirts to the ladies, hats to all satellite winners, hats to everyone who makes the final table, daily bounty prizes and various give-a-ways throughout the day. Bonnie has also taken the sting out of going out on the bubble with her upcoming Bubble tournament. To my knowledge, it's the first of it's kind and just might be the start of something new. Hats off to Bonnie for being such a gracious host.

The WSOP satellites begin tonight at 8:00 p.m. The buy-in is $120 with multiple $100 rebuys. Teri has been running one table satellites from 9:00 a.m. until noon for that day's event and in the evening, starting at 5:00 p.m., she has been spreading $35 one table no-limit satellites, and $110 one table no-limit satellites, along with satellites for the next day's event. The $110 no-limit satellites are 30 minute rounds and players start with $1,000 in chips.

On Friday, April 13, Teri will be spreading two super satellites, one at 6:00 p.m. and one at 8:00 p.m. The buy-in is $60 with multiple $50 rebuys.

On with the final table results . . .

The $120 Omaha 8 or Better event drew 66 players with a prize pool of $6,402.

Buddy Ashmore, who placed second in the Limit Hold'em event, made his second appearance at the final table. The top three chip leaders who started the final table ended up in the top three places.

Gordon Whalon was the third player to be placed on the bubble tournament list giving him a chance to win a Card Player Cruise.

Jim Voyles was the first casualty of the night. Jim started the final table with only $3,000 and just couldn't get a break. Jim took 9th place and collected $130.

Just a half an hour after the dinner break Gary Gentile's luck ran out. Gary finished in 8th place and took home $160.

Ten minutes later, Michael O'Malley, who started the final table with only $1,900 left the final table in 7th place with $224. At 9:00 Buddy Ashmore, from Canada, went all-in for the last time. Buddy had to settle for $288 and 6th place.

Two minutes later Ed Odian, from Palm Desert was eliminated in 5th place and received $352.

On the very next hand Mongoose was all-in for his last time. Mongoose took 4th place and collected $448.

There were three players left, Anthony Hamilton, Gene Bowden and Bo Howard.

At 9:08 Anthony raised all-in against Gene. Anthony showed A-2-5-10 and Gene turned over Q-8-6-4. The board came 9-2-J-8-Q, and Gene scooped the pot with queens up. Anthony took 3rd place and $768.

Bo and Gene were now heads-up. Bo had a slight chip lead with $32,300 and Gene had $29,700.

On the sixth hand of heads-up play, Bo raised from the small blind and Gene called. The flop came 3c-Qs-Qd, Bo bet, Gene raised and Bo called. The turn card was a seven of diamonds, Bo checked, Gene bet and Bo called. The river card came another seven, Bo checked, Gene bet all-in, Bo thought about it for a while and decided to make the call. Gene said, "If you can call I'm beat, I was on a draw." That he was, Gene showed Ah-Kd-9d-3s, he had turned a diamond draw but missed. Bo showed J-J-10-10 and had made a great call for the win.

Gene Bowden from Yuma took 2nd place and $1,472. At 9:25 p.m. Bo Howard, from Phoenix, was declared the winner of the Omaha 8 or Better event and took home $2,560.

Congratulations, Bo!
