Tournament Report
TKO by Boxer Ricky 'The Rooster' Madrid
The 2009 Winnin' O' the Green series attracted 170 players who paid $300+$35 for a shot at a $49,470 prize pool with $18,675 going to first place. With 850,000 chips in play and blinds at 2000/4000 with a 500 ante, play at the final table started off action-packed.
At 2:30am, after 10+ hours of play, the final table was set and on hand #6 boxer and chip leader Ricky 'The Rooster' Madrid called the all-in of short stack pro Paul Darden. Ricky showed pocket 6s and Paul, who won the event from the night before, showed A-9. The board fell Q-J-8-2-K. Paul missed pairing up or hitting his gut shot and was eliminated in 10th place for $865. Paul can add that to his pile of cash he won less than 24 hours ago.
On the very next hand (#7) Ricky 'The Rooster' was raising from late position and was re-raised all-in by Gareth Cook in the cutoff position. Ricky quickly called and showed A-Q. Gareth saw he was dominated and revealed his Ks-Qs. The board followed with A-7-9-K-A and Ricky's kicker played to apply the second knockout in 2 hands. Gareth Cook finished in 9th place for $990.
Hand #16 was a four-way pot with 3 of the players all-in. Philip Lauro held pocket 3s, Sungho Yang had wired Jacks, Ricky Madrid lead the field with pocket Aces, and Tom Nguyen showed his pocket Queens. The flop was Ac-5c-2. Ricky hit top set but Sungho had a backdoor flush draw with his Jack of Clubs and Philip Lauro had a gutshot wheel draw looking for a 4. The turn was a 9c keeping Sungho's flush draw alive. The miracle turn 4 gave Philip Lauro the wheel and scooped the entire pot. Tom Nguyen finished in 8th place and collected $1,115 while Sungo Yang finished in 7th for $1,235.
On hand #20 Samir Alquza called the all-in raise from Bob Klobuchar short stack. Bob showed a suited 9h-7h and Samir showed his dominating 10c-9c. The flop was Q-Q-4 and Samir increased his lead but Bob was still drawing live for a 7. The turn 4 gave Bob some more hope looking to chop the pot with a river Jack or higher. The river was an 8 and Samir's 10 kicker played sending Bob Klobuchar out in 6th place earning $1,730.
The final five players requested a chip count calculation and after a couple of minutes of discussion once the numbers were returned, the agreed on a deal. Ricky 'The Rooster' Madrid had the chip lead and was declared the winner.
