DICK WILLIAMS MOWS DOWN FIELD TO WIN NO-LIMIT EVENT
By Debbie Burkhead
Now for the results of the $120 No-Limit event.
Today’s event began with 164 players and all but 12 players made a rebuy after taking the prize pool to $31,999.
Final table play began at 9:30 with 30 minute rounds. The blinds were $500-$1,000 with a $200 ante.
Dick Williams was the chip leader with $62,000, Jon “Hippie” Andlovec was in second with $46,000, Sammy Yee was in third with $30,300, Lew was in fourth with $20,900, Salah Levy Avner was in fifth with $20,200, Don Lesh was in sixth with $18,100, Cliff Buehler was in seventh with $17,200, James Cummings was in eighth with $14,300 and Dale Hunsucker was in ninth with $9,000.
On the thirteenth hand of final table play Salah Levy Avner played his last hand. Avner moved all-in for his remaining $10,000 and Lew Thomas went over the top with his remaining $21,000, narrowing the field to heads-up. Avner showed J-7 offsuit and Lew turned over K-Q. The board came 10-Q-3-J-4 and Lew’s pair of queens sent Avner to the rail to collect $832 for his 9th place finish.
Five hand’s later Dale Hunsucker raised $1,400 on his small blind and Cliff Buehler called on the big blind. Dale showed A-8 and Cliff turned over K-5. The board came 7-Q-J-6-5 which gave Cliff a pair of fives on the river. Dale took home $992 for his 8th place finish.
At 10:05 the blinds rose to $500-$1,000 with a $300 ante.
Ten minutes later Cliff was eliminated by Dick Williams. Dick smooth called under the gun, Cliff moved all-in and Dick called. Cliff showed 7-8 and Dick had A-J. The flop came with an ace and Cliff was forced to take $1,216 for a 7th place finish.
There were no more casualties at that level and at 10:35 the blinds increased to $1,00-$2,000 with a $400 ante.
At 10:50 Don Lesh ran into some bad luck after flopping a pair of tens on his small blind. Dick had called Lew’s big blind, Don called from the small blind and Lew checked the big blind. The flop came 5-K-10, Don moved all-in and Dick made the call. Dick showed K-Q and Don turned over 10-9. Dick had flopped a pair of kings against Don’s tens. The turn came a deuce and the river card was another deuce. Don took $1,536 for his 6th place finish.
On the last hand of that level James Cummings was also eliminated by Dick. James had the small blind. Dick called, James went all-in for $2,000 more and Dick made the call. James had pocket nines and Dick showed Q-9. The flop came 10-8-6 which gave both players a straight draw but James was in the lead with his pair of nines. The turn card was a jack which gave Dick a queen high straight and the river was a seven which gave James a straight also but only jack high. James left the final table in 5th place and collected $1,984.
At 11:05 the blinds increased to $1,500-$3,000 with a $600 ante.
Thirty minutes later on the last hand of that round Dick raised $9,500. Lew moved all-in and Dick made the call. Lew showed A-Q and Dick turned over A-K. The board came 8-5-J-2-7 and Dick’s king kicker took the pot. Lew finished in 4th place and took home $2,688.
The remaining three players raced off the $25 chips and took a break.
At 11:45 the blinds rose to $2,000-$4,000 with a $1,000 ante.
Dick had the chip lead with $123,000, Hippie John was in 2nd with $84,500 and Sammy was trailing with $30,500.
Play continued for three hands and before the fourth hand was dealt the players agreed on a three-way split. Sammy Yee finished third and collected $3,808, Hippie Jon took second place and $5,728 and Dick Williams was declared the winner and received the clock trophy, a TOC qualification and $10,240.
Dick managed to single-handedly eliminate four out of the six players knocked out at the final table. I had the misfortune of playing at his table and witnessed him eliminate many more players prior to the final table. Dick eliminated me in 20th place but at least I feel better that he went on to win the tournament and not blow off my chips to someone else.
Congratulations, Dick!
