BERT FINDS NO LIMIT IN LIMIT OMAHA H/L 8 OR BETTER

The $225 Omaha High-Low 8 or Better event began with 105 players and created a prize pool of $21,000.

The final table began at 7:30 with 10 players. There was 18 minutes left at the $1,000-$2,000 limit with blinds at $500-$1,000.

Brian Saltus was the chip leader with $24,500, Brian Brown was in second with $22,000, Christina Hung was in third with $13,500, Raymond Menzie and Ralph Morton were tied for fourth with $10,000, Jim Pechac was in fifth with $8,000, Skip Kelly was in sixth with $7,500, Bert Wenzel and Chuck Franck were tied for seventh with $4,000 and trailing in last place was Joshua Sisak with $1,500.

On the third hand of final table play Joshua was all-in before the flop against Ralph. The board came 9-3-6-J-4. Ralph scooped the pot with a straight and a six low. Joshua took 10th place and collected $490.

On the ninth hand played Ralph called, Christina called, Ray raised, Ralph called and Christina called all-in with her last $1,000. The flop came Q-10-8, Ray bet and Ralph called. The turn card was a seven, Ray bet and Ralph called. The river was another seven, Ray checked and Ralph checked. Ray had flop a straight with a J-9 and scooped the pot. Christina, last nights winner, was forced to take an early out with a 9th place finish and added $573 to her bankroll.

At 7:50 the limit increased to $1,500-$3,000 with $500-$1,000 blinds.

On the fifth hand of the new limit Jim lost a big pot to Ralph and was left with only $1,000. The next hand was his small blind and after posting he was left with only $500. He did not protect his blind and opted to save the $500 for another hand.

Jim waited until one hand before his big blind to play a hand with his remaining $500. Ray called and Chuck called. The flop came 8-Q-6, Chuck bet, Brown called and Ray called. The turn card was a three, Chuck checked, Brown bet, Ray folded and Chuck called. The river card came a six, Chuck checked and Brown checked. Chuck scooped the pot with aces up and an ace-four for low. Jim finished in 8th place and took home $701.

Two hands later Brown raised and Skip called all-in for his remaining chips. The board came 2-2-10-3-9 and Brown scooped with 9-2 which gave him a full house on the river. Skip was eliminated in 7th place and pocketed $882.

At 8:55 Chuck raised and Bert called on his big blind. The flop came 2-K-4, Bert bet and Chuck called. The turn card was a ace, Bert bet and Chuck called. The river card was a five, Bert bet and Chuck called all-in for $2,500. Chuck had turned trip aces but Bert caught a wheel on the river for the scoop. Chuck finished in 6th place and collected $1,134.

Three hands later Ray called, Bert called, Ralph raised, Ray called all-in and Bert called. The flop came Q-8-7, Bert checked and Ralph checked. The turn card was a jack and both players checked again. The river card came another eight and both players checked again. Ray had pocket aces and was in the lead until the river card gave Ralph a set of eights. Ray had to take 5th place and added $1,491 to his bankroll.

At four handed the limit increased to $3,000-$6,000 with blinds at $1,500-$3,000.

On the fifth hand of play Ralph had dropped to $2,500 after two consecutive beats. On the sixth hand he was all-in on his big blind. Brown raised and Bert called. The flop came 5-7-9, Bert bet and Brown called. The turn card was a six, Bert bet and Brown called. The river card was a deuce, Bert bet and Brown called. Bert made a seven high straight on the turn for another scooper. Ralph was sent home in 4th place and collected $1,995.

At 9:35 Bert was the chip leader with $77,000, Brian Saltus was in second with $20,500 and Brown was trailing with $7,500.

At 9:45 the limit increased to $4,000-$8,000 with $2,000-$4,000 blinds.

Three hands later Bert raised and Brown called all-in for his remaining $3,500. Brown had Q-J-8-2 and Bert had A-A-J-6. The board came A-9-4-9-K and Bert scooped another pot and eliminated another player in the process. Brown took home $2,709 for his 3rd place finish.

It was 9:50 and it was heads-up between Bert and Saltus.

On the very first hand of heads-up play Saltus raised, Bert reraised and Brian called. The flop came Ad-2c-8d, Bert bet, Saltus raised, Bert reraised and Saltus called. The turn card was a 10 of diamonds, Bert bet and Saltus called all-in. Bert had Ad-4d-3s-9c and Saltus showed As-8h-4h-Kc. The river card was a seven of diamonds and not only gave Bert the low it gave him the nut flush for high. Bert scooped the last pot of the night and Saltus had to settle for 2nd place and $3,885 in cold had cash.

Bert Wenzil was the 1st place winner of the Omaha High-Low tournament and collected $7,140.
