Tournament Report

MARK “THE SHARK” SEIF FINISHES IN FIRST PLACE
By Debbie Burkhead

The $330 Pot-Limit Hold’em event drew 63 players which created a prize pool of $18,900.

At 5:45 the remaining nine players went to one table but only seven would make the money. There were 15 minutes left at $150-$300 blinds.

At 6:00 Kenny Phan and William Kirby went all-in against Mark Seif and both were eliminated. The seven players left made up the final table and the chip leader was Mark Seif with $20,825. At 6:05 the blinds increased to $200-$400.

Ten minutes later Exxon Feyznia called all-in for his remaining $400, Dennis Derge called and Howard Mann checked. The flop came J-7-A, Dennis checked and Howard checked. The turn card came a nine and it was checked by both players. The river was another seven, it was checked again. Dennis had 10-9, Exxon had Q-10 and Howard showed 7-5 for trip sevens. Exxon was eliminated in 7th place and collected $851.

At 6:30 the remaining six broke for dinner until 7:30. Mark was still in the lead with $36,200, Larry Anderson was in second with $7,600, Tex Morgan was in third with $6,500, Howard was in fourth with $5,600, Hal Kant was in fifth with $5,400, Dennis was in sixth and in trouble with only $1,700.

At 7:30 play resumed with 15 minutes left on the clock with $200-$400 blinds. Ten minutes later Mark called, Dennis called, Howard called, Tex called and Hal checked on the big blind. The flop came 9-2-K, all five checked. The turn card was a trey, it was checked to Dennis and he bet, and Mark was his only caller. The river card was a queen, Mark bet $1,500 and Dennis called all-in for his remaining $1,300. Dennis showed pocket deuces and had flop a set. Mark turned over pocket treys and had turned a set of treys for the win. Dennis had to settle for 6th place and $1,058.

At 7:45 the blinds went to $300-$600. Thirty-six hands were dealt during that level and not a single player was eliminated. At 8:30 the blinds increased to $400-$800.

Twenty-five minutes later Tex raised $2,800, Mark reraised $1,400 more and Tex called all-in for his remaining $1,400. Tex showed Q-9 and Mark had pocket kings. The flop came 6-2-2-J-5 and Tex was sent home in 5th place with $1,380.

At 9:05 Hal raised to $2,500, Mark reraised $4,000 more and Hal called all-in for $2,500. Hal showed A-3 and Mark turned over K-J. The board came 10-K-2-Q-K and Mark made trip kings. Hal took 4th place and pocketed $1,890.

One hand before the break Howard and Larry went head-to-head and Howard doubled through to $20,000 with a pair of eights.

At 9:07 the players took a ten minute break and raced off the $100 checks. Mark was still in the lead with $38,200, Howard had closed up the gap in second with $20,000 and Larry was in real trouble with only $4,800.

At 9:20 the blinds went to $500-$1,000. On the third hand Larry raised, Howard reraised and Larry called all-in. Larry showed K-J and Howard had A-Q. The board came 9-5-4-Q-8 and Howard won with a pair of queens. Larry finished in 3rd place with $2,722. It was heads-up and Howard and Mark were dead even with $31,500 each.

After 30 minutes of heads-up play and 24 hands later Mark called on his small blind and Howard checked the big blind. The flop came Qd-5c-2c, Mark bet $2,000 and Howard called. The turn card was a seven of clubs, Mark bet $6,000, Howard reraised all-in and Mark called. Howard showed the eight and three of clubs for the flush and Mark turned over the queen and ten of clubs for a higher flush. Howard had no outs and had to settle for 2nd place and $4,177. At one point Howard was down to $3,700 and made quite a comeback to finish in second place.

Mark finished in 1st place and added $6,832 to his bankroll. Mark had tickets to the concert, miss the fight between Ali and Frazier and the ball game he’d bet on but admitted it was all worth it.

Congratulations, Mark!
