Kevin Newkirk Chips Up at Final Table

Event #4 of the Deepstack Mini Series was the first Limit Hold'em event in the series. 116 Limit players converged at The Bike to create an $11,252 prize pool with $4,252 going to 1st place. The final 10 players set the final table at 11:30pm with a few short stacks and blinds at 2K/4K. The average chip stack was 58,200.

On the very first hand, Jim Trotter got it all-in from the button with A-J and had Kevin Newkirk dominated with an A-10. The board fell Q-7-3-10-8 as Kevin hit his 10 kicker on the turn and knocked out Trotter in 10th place. Jim Trotter collected his $195.

Hand #17 found shortstack Mario “Not that Mario Lopez" Lopez all-in for his last 3,000 chips. There were 2 callers and the board was checked down to the river when Kevin Newkirk hit another big hand with a flush. The board was J-4s-2s-As-2 and Kevin was holding 9s-7s. Mario mucked his all-in hand (he had a Jack). Mario Lopez finished in 9th place and collected $225.

Just a few hands later, the blinds battled with big blind Charlie Shamaoun all-in holding A-4. Edward Farley in the small blind held J-J. The board flopped a Jack (A-J-7-3-4) and Edward's set held against Charlie's Aces-up. Charlie Shamaoun finished in 8th place and collected $255.

Hand #29 had Kimi Jingu all-in on the turn with an A-9 against “The Terminator" Kevin Newkirk's A-10. The board was Q-Q-4-A-6 and Newkirk's kicker played while Kimi was eliminated in 7th place for $280.

Hand #38 had big blind Chuck Davidson covering button Jimmy Lim. Chuck Davidson held Qs-6s and Jimmy held A-5. The board fell with enough spades for Chuck's liking: 10s-8-4s-3-Q. Jimmy's Ace high was drawing dead after the flop and he found himself out in 6th place collecting $395.

Chuck's knockout punch was short lived when, on hand #45, he decided to get it all-in against The Terminator. Chuck held A-Q and was racing Kevin Newkirk's 7-7. The board came 8-6-6-9-K and Chuck couldn't connect on his overcards. Chuck Davidson finished in 5th place and took home $505.

As the tournament progressed approaching 1am, hand #62 played out to the last elimination of the event. Jesus Herrera re-raised Shun Lu Kao all-in pre-flop. Jesus held Ks-Qs and Shun Lu showed 2s-2. The race was on and the flop fell 9s-6-5s. The turn and river were both spades (6s-7s) and Jesus won with the higher flush. Shun Lu Kao finished in 4th place and earned $675.

After a few more hands, the final three players made a deal while Kevin “The Terminator" Newkirk held 390,000 of the 582,000 chips in play. Kevin was declared the winner and this Limit event has come to a “result" as we say in the tournament world.

BIOGRAPHY

Kevin Newkirk started the final table with an average chip stack but went on a rush that amazed even himself. He was hitting his card when dominated and was hitting huge hands time after time. Everything was working for him although he pointed out that he hasn't won EVERY hand. Point taken, Mr. chip leader. Kevin has been playing poker for about 4 years and this is his first Limit tournament in over 2 years. This is his first tournament win at The Bike and he reminisced about starting to play $2/$4 Limit hold'em way back in '05.
