Tournament Report

The Final Table: Take the Money and Run

Event #11 of the Deepstack Mini Series was a No Limit - No Rebuy event that drew a near sellout field of 317 entries. The prize pool was $30,749. After about nine hours of play, the final table was set. As players were assembling at the final table, there was some discussion of a chip count before they took their ten minute break. Post break the conversations began again about a chip count deal and the numbers were run. After about 5 minutes of discussion, the deal was set and the event had concluded without a single final table hand being dealt.

Ty Tran was the chip leader and was declared the winner. Ty was gracious enough to share a couple of key hands that got him to the final table and consequently the win. To create an immediate loose table image, Ty arrives at his new table (with 3 tables to go) in the big blind. The button limps and the small blind calls. Ty looks down at 7-2 and raised five times the big blind. The button called and the small blind folded. The Ace high flop and it was checked by both players. The turn fell and brick and Ty made a substantial overbet and the button folded. He then showed his 7-2 and the whole table was talking about the crazy new player. Ty got his point across and consequently picked up some pots when his opponents called his bets & raises when he had the best hand.

With two tables to go, one of Ty's opponents raised in front of him and Ty re-raised. His opponent called and the flop was 10-9-9. Ty had Q-J and held an open ended straight and his opponent had A-K. All the money went in after the flop and Ty was in bad shape. The turn 6 changed nothing except there was only one more card to come. The river Queen gave Ty the pot and gave him enough chips to be the chip leader for the duration of the tournament.

BIOGRAPHY

Ty Tran is a Sales Manager in the tech industry. He has been playing poker for 4 ½ years and was first introduced to poker by his friend that dragged him to a local card club. Ty recalled losing a big pot as a beginner because he didn't know a flush beat a straight. A costly mistake that he laughs about today. Ty has read over 30 books on poker and recommends Cloutier's Championship Poker and Gus Hansen's Every Hand Revealed. Ty describes himself as a player who likes to see a lot of hands and will not hesitate to put chips in the pot if he senses weakness or feels that a better hand will fold. He was healthy in chips for most of the tournament, thanks to his loose image.
