Tournament Report

Chiropractor Byung Lee Adjusts (to) Final Table Win

Event #18 of the Deepstack Mini Series was another Deep Stack No Limit tournament. 209 players generated a prize pool of $30,410 with the top payout of $11,245 for 1st place. The final table was set at 1am with an ante of 1000 and blinds of 4000/8000 and about two minutes left before the ante/blinds climb to 1000 6000/12000.

Hand #8 had three-way action with one all-in player. Paul Emata was the shortstack all-in player holding 6-5 and the board was checked down to the river (A-7-4-2-7). Loreto Rodriguez showed K-Q and Wissam Gahsham showed the winning hand with K-4. Paul Emata finished in 10th place and collected $380.

Hand #10 was a heads-up battle between Sam Gahsham and Byung Lee. Sam was all-in with A-6 and was dominated by Byung's A-Q. The flop of Q-Q-5 left Sam looking for running 6s. The turn Ace had Sam drawing dead and he finished in 9th place and collected $455.

Hand #29 was a war between the blinds when Joshua Smith, in the big blind, was all-in against the small blind Justin Dean. Both players appeared to be close in chips and neither were shortstacked. Joshua held K-Q and Justin had the suited connector 8d-7d. The flop fell 10-7-6 giving Justin a middle pair and the lead. The turn 5 changed nothing but the river Queen gave Joshua Smith the best hand with top pair. After the chips were counted, Justin had Joshua covered by 3,000 in chips. Justin had enough for his ante on the next hand.

Hand #30 had Justin all-in for his last 3K. The preflop action folded all the way around to the big blind David Lavin who took his blind back and showed his 7-8. Justin had K-4d this time. Typically a few players would limp in (especially the small blind) to create a better shot at eliminating the all-in player but that did not occur this time. Perhaps the players were protecting their chips knowing that there may be a chip count in the near future. The flop fell 9-6d-2d and Justin increased his lead. The turn 10d gave Justin an even greater lead with a flush draw to go with his King high. The river was an offsuit 7 pairing David Lavin and giving him the best hand. Justin Dean, from Burbank, finished in 8th place for $605.

The final seven players discussed looking at a chip count and it was agreed that they would see the numbers. The table talk while the numbers were calculated was sounding like they would likely play on until they eliminated a couple more players but as the numbers came back, the discussion turned more in the direction of a deal. After about 5 minutes of discussion and negotiation, all players agreed to the deal and the event concluded. Byung Lee held the chip lead by a small margin over Joshua Smith and was declared the winner.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Byung Lee, a local chiropractor, has only been playing poker for one year. His good friend, who was also sweating him on the rail, brought Byung into The Bike about a year ago and introduced him to the $80 No Limit cash game. He typically plays cash games every Sunday with his friends at The Bike and occasionally plays the tournaments. Dr. Lee made a final table in the Mini Series last Sunday in the No Limit Deepstack event. Byung shared that he was so short stacked with 3 tables to go that he picked his spot, tripled up, and built chips for the rest of the tournament.
