Tournament Report
Elliott Turner Wins Player Appreciation Event
The 2009 Mini Series of Poker concluded with Event #25, the $120 buy-in No Limit Hold’em Player Appreciation tournament. A field of 338 players (all of whom played at least one prior Mini Series event) vied for a share of the $32,786 prize pool. The winner of this event received a seat into this year’s Legends of Poker World Poker Tour event in addition to 1st place money. Final table play began at level 16 with blinds at 4-8K with a 1K ante. Jeong Lee arrived as the chip leader with 379,000 of the 1,690,000 chips in play.
Stephane Fitoussi arrived to the final table as one of the short stacks and on hand #8 he was all in with pocket 7’s. Kenneth Nguyen picked up pocket Queens in the small blind and when the board came Q-9-8-10-A Nguyen’s set of Queens sent Fitoussi out in 10th place for $410.
On hand #25 Maria Phan went all in with A-3. She was up against Jeong Lee’s Ad-Kd. The board came 4-7-Qd-7d-10d and Lee made an Ace high flush sending Phan, who was one of the chipleaders going into the final table, out in 9th place for $490.
A few hands later Robert Glass had his last chips in before the flop with K-9. Phuoc Nguyen woke up with A-K in the big blind and called. The board came Q-4-7-6-A and Nguyen’s pair of Aces sent Glass out in 8th place for $655.
Ha Diep went all in from the button with pocket 10’s and ran into Kenneth Nguyen’s pocket Aces from the small blind. The board came Q-J-7-6-A and Nguyen’s pocket Aces were able to hold sending Diep out in 7th place for $815.
Hand #54 saw Jeong Lee go all in with A-J. Kenneth Nguyen called with pocket Jacks. Elliott Turner found pocket Kings in the small blind and reraised all in. Nguyen folded his Jacks as Turner went heads up against Lee. The board came 10-10-8-K-Q and Turner made Kings full of 10’s to best Lee’s Ace high straight sending him out in 6th place for $1,145. Turner raked in a huge pot giving him a substantial chip lead over the remaining players.
With 5 players remaining discussion of a chip count deal came up. The players agreed to have the tournament staff run the numbers. After the amounts were announced, each player approved and thus the tournament was over. Elliott Turner was the chip leader at this point and declared winner of the Mini Series Player Appreciation event earning him a seat into the 2009 Legends of Poker WPT main event.

BIOGRAPHY
Elliott Turner just tried to play good tonight and wait for big hands. He had pocket Aces at the right time when his chip stack was dwindling to double up. Then he picked up pocket Kings at the right time winning a 600K+ pot giving him the chip lead and in position to win tonight’s tournament. |
