Jeffrey Clayton Takes Down Grand Opening Event of 2009 Legends of Poker

The 2009 Legends of Poker had its grand opening at the new Events Center with a $335 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournament with a $100,000 guarantee. This was a 2-day event that started with a total of 802 players vied for a prize pool of $233,382. In addition to first prize of $57,762, the winner also received a $10,000 seat into the Legends of Poker/World Poker Tour main event. Final table play began at level 16 with blinds at 15k-30k with a 5k ante. Florentino Ornelas entered as the chip leader holding 1,450,000 of the 8,822,000 chips in play.

On hand #4 Henry Le raised pre-flop with A-9. Danny Morgan went all-in with pocket 10’s and Le called. The board came J-7-5-J-3 as Morgan’s pair of 10’s sent Le out in 10th place for $2,460.

Few hands later Eric Rothstein was all-in with pocket 7’s against Jorge Leiva’s A-Q. An Ace was in the window of the A-2-3 flop giving Leiva the lead. The turn came a deuce and the river a 3 as Leiva’s pair of Aces bested Rothstein’s pair of 7’s sending him out in 9th place for $4,475.

Hand #23 saw Leiva all-in with Q-9 against Danny Morgan’s A-J. Leiva took the lead when the flop came 4-5-Q however the turn brought an Ace and the river came a 3 as Morgan’s pair of Aces eliminated Leiva out in 8th place for $6,710.

Just a couple hands later Jeff Clayton raised pre-flop with 7-4. Ernesto Pena went all-in with A-9 and Clayton was pot-committed to call. The flop of J-6-8 kept Pena in the lead. The turn came a 3 as Pena’s Ace was still good. The river brought a 4 giving Clayton a pair of 4’s sending Pena out in 7tth place good for $8,950.

The remaining six players discussed a chip count and after the staff ran the numbers the players were in agreement to a deal and to play for the 10k LOP/WPT seat.

On hand #49 Danny Morgan went all-in with A-K and Jeff Clayton called with pocket 9’s. The board came Q-2-5-7-3 knocking Morgan out in 6th place.

A round later Mihaly Molnar had his last chips in with J-7 against J. Tanhtyng Lu’s K-Q. The flop came 6-2-9 with Lu’s King high still in the lead. The turn came a 5 giving Molnar outs to a straight. The river came a 4 as Molnar’s hand failed to improve sending him out in 5th place.

Florentino Ornelas went all-in from the small blind with K-2 against Lu who woke up with A-Q from the big blind. The board came A-J-8-5-6 as Lu’s pair of Aces eliminated Ornelas in 4th place.

Hand #67 saw J. Tanhtyng Lu all-in with 9-2 against Edward Taggart’s K-6. After the board came 6-A-4-A-Q Taggart’s pair of 6’s were enough to send Lu out in 3rd place.

Heads up play between Clayton and Taggart lasted 14 hands. On the very last hand Jeffrey Clayton raised with K-J and Taggart came over the top with pocket 3’s. Clayton made the call and the flop came 10-7-4 as Taggart’s pair of 3’s were still good. The turn brought a King giving Clayton the lead and leaving Taggart only 2 outs to improve. The river came a 6 as Clayton’s pair of Kings bested Taggart’s pair of 3’s sending him out in 2nd place. Jeffrey Clayton earns the 10k LOP/WPT seat as the winner of the first event of the 2009 Legends of Poker.

BIOGRAPHY

Jeffrey Clayton is a cameraman for Fox Channel 11. He has played poker for 5 years. In addition to tournaments you can also see Clayton at the $100 to $500 buy-in No Limit Hold’em cash games. His strategy at the final table was to remain wild like he was earlier in the tournament because he felt when he had a good hand he was going to get paid off.
