Tournament Report

Frankie O’Dell Wins the 2009 Legends of Poker Event #7 H.O.R.S.E. Tournament

There were six W.S.O.P. bracelets between the players at the final table of the 2009 Legends of Poker seventh event a $300 + $35 H.O.R.S.E. tournament. The two day tournament registered a total of 155 entrants and a prize pool of $45,105. In addition to the first prize of $16,610 the winner also received a championship ring. Final table play began at level 19 the starting game was Stud with low card at 5K, complete at 20K, and limits of 20K and 40K. Barbara Enright entered the final table as the chip leader holding $663,000 of the $1,705,000 chips in play.

The final table of the seventh event experienced some of the toughest competition to date at the legends of Poker this year. With such accomplished professional players the action was patient and aggressive. It was not until level 20 while playing Stud Hi-Low that the table had its first elimination. On the 14th hand Roberto Flood found himself all-in against Nick Bognar and with no low and Nick getting trip 7’s for the Hi against Roberto’s two pair of 9’s over 3’s, Roberto Flood was knocked out of the tournament in 8th place earning him $1,225.

We would have to wait until the 21st level with Limit Hold’em as the game and blinds at 20k/40k and limits at 40k/80K before we saw the next player eliminated. Five hands into the Limit Hold’em round found Robert Cramer all-in with A-9 against Frankie O’Dell’s pocket 10’s before the flop. The board gave no help to Cramer as it came 8-4-6-5-8 and Cramer was out in 7th place winning $1,355.

The action at the final table heated up after Robert Cramer’s elimination and we only had to wait five hands for the next player to exit. On the 42nd hand Paul Darden raised in the small blind and was re-raised by Frankie O’Dell in the big blind. After Paul called the flop came 4-Q-A and Paul led out with 40K. Paul was re-raised again by Frankie and Paul called all-in revealing his Q-5. Frankie had the upper hand though turning up his A-8 and the J on the turn and the K on the river did not improve Paul’s hand and he was forced out in 6th place earning him $1,805.

Just three hands later the final table had a three-way pot between Frankie O’Dell, Nick Bognar and Chris Anderson, with Chris all-in before the flop. The board came 9-J-6-7-Q and after Frankie showed his Q-10 for top pair both Nick and Chris mucked their hands sending Chris out in 5th place good for $2,255.

Our final elimination of the tournament happened on the very next hand. On hand #46 Nick Bognar raised and was quickly re-raised by Frankie O’Dell. After some thought Nick decided to re-raise all-in and was called by Frankie. Frankie revealed his A-4 while Nick turned over J-10. The flop gave Frankie the outright lead when it fell A-3-10 and that lead would hold with a 9 on both the turn and river. The pot was awarded to Frankie and Nick was sent out in 4th place taking home $2,700.

The remaining three players discussed a chip count and after the staff ran the numbers the players were in agreement to a deal. Frankie O’Dell was declared the winner of the Legends of Poker seventh event and received the ring and the first prize of $16,610.

BIOGRAPHY

Frankie O’Dell has been playing tournaments since he was twenty-one years old. Over the course of 16 years he has made a WPT final table, won two W.S.O.P. bracelets, and has recorded earnings of over $1.7 million. He says while he enjoys cash games he likes the larger stage of tournament play. Omaha Hi-Low is his game of choice and he feels it is his best as well, and it was a round of Omaha Hi-Low that Frankie was able to battle back from some early misfortune during this H.O.R.S.E. event. When asked about the Legends of Poker, Frankie said that he enjoyed the Deepstack tournaments because they allowed for a certain amount of bad luck and gave him a chance to grind back to the top of the chip leaders. The key hand for him was a massive three-way pot during Omaha Hi-Low where he was able to scoop with an 8 High Straight for Hi and a Wheel for the Low.
