Frankie O’Dell Wins the 2009 Legends of Poker E.O. Event #10 for His Second Ring

The E.O. event saw some faces that are becoming more familiar at the final tables, and in the end Frankie O’Dell added another title to his career and his second for this year’s Legends of Poker. The newly remodeled Event Center at the Bicycle Casino had three W.S.O.P. bracelets between the players at the final table of the Stud Hi-Lo / Omaha Hi-Lo mixed tournament. The two day tournament registered a total of 128 entrants and a prize pool of $37,248. In addition to the first prize of $13,708 the winner also received a championship ring. Final table play began at level 15 the starting game was Omaha Hi-Lo with blinds at 4K/8K and limits at 8K and 16K. Thong Suwansap entered the final table as the chip leader holding $398,000 of the $1,409,000 chips in play.

The final table of the tenth event had some heavy action but we had to wait through the first 27 hands and two levels before our first elimination. On the 28th hand, playing Omaha Hi-Lo with blinds at 5K/10K and Limits at 10K/20K, Michael Christian found himself all-in against Robert “Chipburner” Turner and Frankie O’Dell. Michael had been the short stack since arriving at the final table and had yet to find any traction and he found himself all-in with A-K-Q-6 before the flop. As the flop came 9-6-4 both Robert and Frankie were content to check the flop and the 2 on the turn, but when the river Ace hit a bet on the river by Robert forced Frankie to fold. Robert turned over his hole cards and with his 5-2-3-8 he made the wheel scooping the pot and eliminating Michael in the process. Michael left in 8th place and taking home $780.

After waiting so long for our first player to exit we had only to wait four hands for our next elimination. On the 31st hand Barry Marfleet pushed all-in on the turn and was called by both Thong Suwansap and Frankie O’Dell. The board was J-7-7-6 and with a 2 on the river both Thong and Frankie wade several bets. The cards were turned over to show Frankie had a full house of J’s over 7’s for the Hi and Thong had A-2-3-4-6 for the Lo, eliminating Barry in 7th place earning him $1,110.

Two levels and 36 hands later had another three way pot with Frankie O’Dell, Hamid Mohammadi, and Shan Gu. Shan was all in before the flop with K-K-Q-10 and after the board came 7-9-J-4-A Frankie bet the river and Hamid folded. Frankie showed his Ace high flush with his A-2-6-J and Shan was eliminated in 6th place good for $1,480.

Robert “Chipburner” Turner would be our 5th place finisher earning $1,860 when he was forced to call all-in against Thong Suwansap on the 93rd hand of the final table. Thong would only get a pair of 9’s after his seventh card was dealt during the Stud round, but that was still better than Robert’s pair of 8’s.

Our final elimination came on the 99th hand when Thong Suwansap found himself all-in against Frankie O’Dell. After all seven cards were dealt to both players Thong had a pair of 4’s and no Lo against Frankie who ended up with Queen’s up. Thong was knocked out in 4th place earning him $2,230.

The remaining three players discussed a chip count and after the staff ran the numbers the players were in agreement to a deal. Frankie O’Dell was declared the winner of the Legends of Poker seventh event and received the ring and the first prize of $13,708.

When asked about the Legends of Poker, Frankie said that he enjoyed the Deepstack tournaments because they allow for a certain amount of bad luck early in the tournament.
